‘Calendar Girls’ still at the Grand

“Calendar Girls” (12A); Grand Cinema; from Friday, October 17th

HAILED as the biggest box office hit of 2003, “Cal endar Girls” has been draw ing full houses at the Grand, Clitheroe, and has been held over for a second week. The film focuses on the

t t ip s

trials and tribulations of 11 women from the Women’s Institute branch in the vil lage of Rylstone, near Skip- ton. One of the women, Angela Baker, suffered a tragic loss with the untime ly death of her husband, John; from a form of cancer. Before his death, Angela

and the other WI girls had joked about posing nude for an “alternative WI calen dar”, and they bravely decided to do it in John’s memory. Another of the women,

Lynda Logan, is married to renowned local artist Terry, and he took the tastefully

composed pictures. The

. girls were pictured carrying out traditional WI pas times, their blushes spared by carefully placed jam pans, sieves and knitting. The film follows the

women and their relation ships after they are cata pulted into the national and even international spotlight. And although it is ulti

mately heartwarming, it is not sugar-coated. The sud den onset of fame put con siderable strain on friend ships and has caused a much-publicised split among the women - some thing the film does not shy away from. Yet there is no getting

away from the incredible achievement of all the Ryl stone WI women, which is celebrated in Calendar Girls.

Question: Which actress who starred in Prime Suspect plays one of the main characters in Calendar Girls?

Journey to Mars with Sir Patrick

SIR Patrick Moore, media per sonality and the UK’s leading stargazer, celebrates his 80th birthday year by returning to the Burnley Mechanics with an entirely new lecture, “MARS:

The Next Frontier”. It takes place tonight at the pop

ular Burnley venue and is a must- see event for anyone with their head in the stars. Mars - the Red Planet - has always

been regarded as a world that might support life. We now know that there are no lit

tle green Martians, but the planet cannot be dismissed as sterile and man will soon reach it, with various

“MARS: The Next Fron tier”; Sir Patrick Moore; Burnley Mechanics; October 16th

probes are set to land there this year. Using the latest colour slide projec

tions available, Sir Patrick - himself a life-time observer of Mars - will pass on the latest knowledge of conditions there and discuss plans for manned missions, permanent bases and even tual colonies. Tonight’s presentation is suitable

for all ages and should prove a fasci nating encounter. For ticket prices and availability,

call the Mechanics box office on 01282 664400.

cultures combine to create a powerful and spirited live show. The Mechanics box office number is
