60 % increase in number killed by drink-drivers

A SHOCKING 60% rise in the number of people killed by drink-drivers was recorded in Lancashire last year. In 2002 there were eight fatal accidents, com
pared to five in 2001. Seventy-one people were seriously injured in Lancashire drink-drive crashes in 2002,

Helping drivers cope with winter hazards
WITH winter almost upon us, drivers can
expect dark evenings, bad visibility and slip pery roads. Blackburn Area Road Safety Association
has the know-how to contend with all those hazards and many more. Its latest Better Driving course is due to
start on November 4th, and anyone who wants to improve their driving is welcome to enrol. The course comprises a six-week programme
of Tuesday evening lectures and Sunday morning practical driving sessions, covering topics including car control, braking and cor nering, motorway driving and skid prevention and control. Led by friendly instructors with a wide
experience of driving in all conditions, the course is based on the police driving manual, “Roadcraft”.The course costs £20, or £15 for students, and that fee includes one year’s mem bership of BARSA. Candidates can go on to take advanced dri
ving tests, which are optional and carry an extracost., The new Better Driving course starts at 8
