Website semi .nar to Mast will be avoid legal minefield at local farm

. , ,

TAKING care of business in today’s hi-tech world inevitably means building a company website, but joining the information superhigh way can be a short cut to a legal minefield. That is why businesses across East

Lancashire have been queuing up to find out how they can stay on the right side of the law. Rapidly changing Internet legislation

means that firms are unsure of their posi tion. So when the East Lancashire e-Busi-

ness Club offered a free seminar to shed light on the issues, places were snapped up instantly.

In fact, the seminar was so oversub- ,

scribed that a second event is planned for later this year. The seminar was run in conjunction

with Eversheds LLP, a major legal firm and internationally- recognised experts in e-commerce and the law, who gave a no- nonsense guide to abiding by the legisla tion. Areas covered included the Data Pro

tection Act, the Disability Discrimination Act, the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations and the new Privacy and Electronic Communications Regula tions Act, which comes into force on Octo ber 31st. Such legislation affects any business

with a website, or any that uses commer cial e-mail, and without the right knowl edge they could be breaking the law or not

taking full advantage of the protection available. Mike Caulfield, of the e-Business Club,

said: “The Office of Fair Trading is intro ducing stringent penalties for those who don’t comply and being unaware of the law is not a valid defence against breaking i t - companies simply can’t afford to ignore these laws. “The e-Business Club’s message is vital for website operators and the senders of

' commercial e-mails if they want to stay on the right side of the law. It was also really useful in learning about how the same laws can protect us. “For those who missed the seminar,

Eversheds’ presentation can be down loaded from the Club website (www.elancs-ebusinessclub.co.uk).”

approve the application, subject to conditions on materials to be used and landscaping of the site.

“Calendar Girls” (12A)j Grand Cinema; from Friday, October 11

HAILED as the biggest box office hit of 2003, “Cal endar Girls” has been draw ing full houses at the Grand, Clitheroe, and has been held over for a second week.

The film focuses on the

trials and tribulations of 11 women from the Women’s Institute branch in the vil lage of Rylstone, near Skip- ton. One of the women, Angela Baker, suffered a tragic loss with the untime ly death of her husband, John, from a form of cancer. Before his death, Angela

and the other WI girls had joked about posing nude for an “alternative WI calen dar”, and they bravely decided to do it in John’s memory. Another of the women,

Lynda Logan, is married to renowned local artist Terry, and he took the tastefully
