A L0NK shearling tup which collected a string of prizes at shows this summer realised a splendid price of 5,050 guineas at Clitheroe Auction Mart’s Registered Lonk Sale on Monday. I t won the championship for its owner,
Mr Robert Lister, of Little Mearley Hall, Worston, and his shepherd, Phillip Gould. The prize tup was bought by Mr C. Mitchell, of Cold Well Farm, Huddersfield, who also enjoyed a successful day’s trading. It included selling a six-shear tup to Mr Chris Crowther, of Upper Woodhouse Farm, Oldham, for 4,150 guineas. Despite an excellent trade for the best
rams, in general the rest of the day’s trade was variable. Although several tups had the same home and parentage, the scrapie test results made a vast amount of difference to the buyers. Lonk ram lambs made to 80 guineas
(average 45 guineas), Lonk shearlings made to 5,100 guineas (average 608 guineas), Lonk aged rams made to 4,150 guineas (average 557 guineas). Mr Geoff Morton was the judge for the
day. Our picture shows the champion Lonk shearling tup, which raised 5,500 guineas at Monday’s sale, (s)

• Clitheroe invited farmers to meet? Roly Puzey from the farmer's organisation, Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF), and Guy Smith, an
Essex farmer and journalist. They explained how fanners can
work towards improving the rela tionship and impression of the farming industry to the public. Mr Puzey,- as a manager with
LEAF, said he saw and was very aware of the problems in the changing
‘ roll and public perception of the agri cultural industry with farming ties being further and further away from the non-farming public. To help, LEAF has introduced a CD-rom and cassette, "Speak Out", providing farmers with a tool to work towards re-kindling this relationship.
_ THE Forward Farming Pro ject with farmer. John Alpe, of New Laund Farm, Whitewell,
Part of the process behind becom- , Mr Smith explained that by being
ing a LEAF farmer is to carry out an audit to assist in the Integration of Farm Management and to highlight areas where the farm should'be look- , ing to improve, not just financially, ■ but also environmentally, and to set achievable goals which can be used in
• the management of the farm. ■ Due to industrial development and
economic pressures, farms have amal gamated, with farmers and their staff having to work long and often tedious hours to make ends meet. Also with the additional requirements to 1 improve welfare and environmental standards means the one time highly involved agricultural community has even less time to he active in the local towns and villages. To aid the farmer, LEAF produced
