Welcome to heroes back from Iraq

AFTER four-and-a-half months of a difficult and dangerous mis sion, a “welcome home” parade was held for our boys who returned from Iraq yesterday. The parade, which took place

in Preston, recognised the achievements of the soldiers from the Queen’s Lancashire Regi ment, who put their lives on the line. • About 500 members of the 1st

Battalion, who.worked day and night to restore peace in the city of Basra, proudly exercised their Freedom of the Borough, by marching through the city. Many wives, families and

friends of the heroes watched the fighters march, dressed in their desert uniforms. The Weeton-based King’s

Division Normandy Band accompanied the battalion, and

the Mayor of Preston, Coun. Neil Cartwright, and the Colonel of the Regiment, Brigadier Geof frey Sheldon, took the salute in front of the Harris buildings. Commanding Officer of the 1st

Battalion, Lt Col Jorge Mendon- ca said: “The literally heroic and Herculean efforts of the officers and soldiers of this brilliant bat talion, achieved in unimaginable heat, have made me very proud to be a Queen’s Lancashire.” Mayors from other Lancashire

boroughs who have honoured the regiment with their Freedom also attended. A display set up in the Flag-

market, by the Regimental Recruiting Team, revealed a small snippet about life in the army to the public. A rifle-range and paint-ball

range was also set up for the citi zens to test their skills. • Interviews with those who

have returned from Basra will appear in our newspaper next week.

Awareness day is a big success

ATTENDANCE a t an Islamic awareness day in Clitheroe was described as excellent by an organis er.

Mr Sheraz Arshad, who is the group

secretary a t the Medina Islamic Educa tion Centre, which arranged the event, said: “I am really happy with the way it went. I t was a resounding success.” He was particularly delighted that most

attending were not Muslims and asked many pertinent questions. The "Understanding Islam" event was held in Ribble Valley Borough Council

Chambers. Part of the national Islamic Awareness Week, it was organised to show more about the Muslim faith and highlight aspects of it in the lives of Muslims living in Clitheroe. The Mayor of Ribble Valley, Coun. Alan

Yearing, officially welcomed visitors when he opened Saturday’s event. He spoke of the need for understanding

among different race and faith groups within the Ribble Valley and commended the efforts of local organisations that strive to promote tolerance and understanding within the community. Slide shows were presented of world-

renowned Islamic a r t and architecture, with artefacts available for people to see. A computer programme of information

about prayer, along with literature and pamphlets on the principles of faith and history, gave an overview of Islamic belief structures and there was a calligraphy workshop at which cards were produced for visitors with their names’ written in Arabic text. Visitors to the event were treated to a

special buffet of food from Islamic coun tries. This was freshly prepared by a Mid dle Eastern couple specialising in Arabic cuisine, who were also on hand during the

day to provide information about how the food was made and the origins of fare from that part of the world. Mr Arshad said th a t he hoped events

like it would help to foster better relations between Muslims and other groups within

' the Ribble Valley. He added: “There are many misconceptions and preconceived ideas around what Islam is actually about, thanks to'recent events around the world, which have not always been reported on responsibly. I t is important that awareness events like these are held to redress the bal ance impartially when it comes to under standing faith and I hope other faith and

interest groups will also try to access dif ferent communities in terms of factually conveying their beliefs and cultures. I for one would love to attend an Understand ing Christianity or Judaism event". For fu r th e r details contact: Sheraz

Arshad on 01200 422035 and 07812 584020. The website a t www.miec.org.uk can also be visited. Our pictures show Sanna and Arifa Hus

sain using a laptop computer to access information (081103/7b) and Mr Arshad, a t left, accompanied by members of the local Muslim community, a t the event. (081103/7a)

PLANT hunter Dr Brian Barnes gave an interesting and informa tive talk to Clitheroe Naturalists, entitled “Plant Hunting in the Yorkshire Dales”. Although he lives in Southport,

Dr Barnes has a great affection for the area around the three peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen- y-Ghent. As this was an area where many

of his audience had enjoyed some memorable walks, it was particu larly enjoyable for them to recog nise many of the places and plants depicted in the speaker’s excellent slides. They showed not only the land scape, but also detailed close-ups
