None was forgotten as Valley paid its
weak November midday sun as th e impressive procession of remembrance wound its way up the steep incline. From young children to school
pupils, civic and political represen tatives, uniformed organisations, ex- Servicemen and women, to those who simply wished to pay their respects, almost every aspect of the town's life was represented.
The ceremony followed a special
service a t Trin i ty ' Methodist Church which was conducted by the Rev. Richard Atkinson. As the procession, fronted by
Clitheroe Town Band, dispersed to allow individuals with wreaths to assemble around the town's impos ing war memorial, Mr Atkinson led the prayers before reading the Exhortation for the Fallen, followed
by the Last Post, played by town bandsman Lee Collard, marking two minutes'silence. Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Alan
Yearing led the wreath-laying prior to the Kohima Epitaph and bless ing, during which Mr Atkinson called for those assembled to bless "all those who provoke peace." Clitheroe Mayor Coun. Mrs Joan Knight expressed thanks to all who
had attended, reminding them that the garden of remembrance was in memory of not only those who died in the 1914-18 war, but all those who had died in wars since, particularly in Iraq. On Tuesday, the 11th day of the

IN Clithcroe every man, woman and child was represented at the Remembrance service (C091103/2j) Simple dignity
I WAS in Clitheroe for the I I a.m. silence on Armistice Day and was impressed by the simple dignity shown by every one. This was in stark con
trast to a group of walkers last Sunday, who walked right through the village Act of Remembrance at the war memorial. They showed complete
contempt. There were a lot of children present at the memorial and I really do wonder what sort of exam ple these adults felt they were showing. Ten minutes in a whole year should not have been long to wait, but I hope they read this letter and stop and think
ard and the idea was sup- irted by the members. WI easurer Mrs K. Scott pre- nted a satisfactory financial atement, and Mrs C. listlethwaite gave the annu- branch report. A delicious hot supper was rved by Mr Tim Slater, of e Country Kitchen, addington. Mrs Elizabeth ibinson had baked the birth- ly cake and decorated it, 'propriately with sunflower •jtifs. Honour for those who never went home
A SPECIAL service for the Fallen took place at Calderstones as part of the annual Remem brance Day ceremonies. The service was held a t the chapel a t
Calderstones and was attended by deputy Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Charles Wark- man, accompanied by his wife, Ruth, the deputy Mayoress. They joined representatives and Colour
Guards of the local Royal British Legion groups to pay their respects at a place which differs somewhat from other memorial loca tions, as Calderstones has its own military cemetery. The hospital was filled with injured soldiers
during the First World War and took conva lescent Servicemen during the Second World War. Those who died from their wounds while at
the hospital were buried nearby, in a cemetery which is similar to those across the world in which British and Commonwealth Service men lie. Pictured left are dignitaries and RBL mem bers at Calderstones. (A011103/1)
