Hidden beneath the coupe-like lines is a rationale that brooks no argument. Saab realised some time ago that they were in effect dominating a market of


one with their hatch-based executive car. Research had shown that buyers in this sector


subconsciously associated hatchbacks with cars in the next class down - hardly the ticket for a manufacturer keen to establish itse lf as the equal of Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar and BMW.
