Vauxhall’s blown shark T

HE Vauxhall VX220 Turbo Sprint is a roadster like nothing else you have ever driven. Savage does not

oped by Vauxhall to showcase quite what the VX220 chassis is capable of but rest assured, there will be a limited production run of this model. Pester your dealer as soon as possible if you want supercar per formance, handling and a serious sense of occasion for mainstream money. The car I tried features 237 b.h.p. on tap

and is seriously stripped out with a full 56kg having been pared from the standard VX220 Turbo’s figure. Beneath the garish de cals , there is no airbag, no bonnet hinges, no heater matrix and very little in the way of sound insulation. The flywheel has been ligh ten ed by 2.5kg for more instantaneous reponses and the addition

The puff daddy from Porsche A

S a m oney no ob je c t , drive every day supercar, the Porsche 911 Turbo has no peers.

Unless you are a Porsche fan, you

can be forgiven for mistaking lesser 3.2-litre 911s for their Boxster siblings front-on. But when the 3.6-litre Turbo looms up in your rear view mirror there will be no mistaking the distinc tive lights, flared nostrils, burly shoul ders and low stance of this bruiser of a Porsche. Normally the twin turbo-charger ‘flat six’ engine punches out 420 b.h.p.,

by Andy Enright

12 b.h.p. up on the previous Turbo, but this particular example had undergone a little massaging courtesy of a factory 450 b.h.p. conversion. It launches to 60 m.p.h. in under four seconds, to 100 m.p.h. in just 8.8 and carries on to a tickle over 190 m.p.h. And probably jail if you try tha t anywhere other than an autobahn or racetrack. Drive the Turbo hard and you’ll be lucky to see 14 m.p.g. but Porsche

Rubber soul

by Andy Enright T

AKE a look out of the window at the moment and there exists a very good chance that it is raining.

You will possibly have to drive to and from

work tomorrow in the wet and it pays to have the right rubber for the job. A number of decent rain tyres are available, one company even basing its advertisements on their water shedding properties, but what if you own a performance car and also want a tyre that can cut the mustard in the dry? That is a tougher task and there are some notable contenders, but Goodyear claims to have the best tool for the job with the Eagle PI. Time then, for a test with a difference. How

much difference does quality rubber really make? For the ultimate venue, we chose the ultimate race circuit, the awesome Nurbur gring Nordschleife, in Germany’s Eifel moun tains, a 73-corner rollercoaster behind which no inferior tyre could hide. As for the tyres themselves, we opted to try a brand that real ly does claim to make a difference - and has the manufacturer-led development back ground to prove it. Goodyear is the world’s largest tyre compa

ny and is responsible for the first tubeless tyre, the first Z speed-rated tyre, the first original equipment run-flat tyre and the first energy saving car tyre to be made partly from corn. With 368 Grand Prix victories to its name it is no surprise that the company’s ultra-high per formance tyre, the Eagle FI GS-D3, has been developed from the lessons learnt from motor-. sport. This was the one we chose to fit to our test car, a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII FQ- 300, typical of the kind of machine on which the right rubber really makes a difference. The Eagle FI GS-D3 features some clever

new innovations, notably OneTRED technol ogy. This extends the familiar V-shaped direc tional tread design with continuous channels from the solid centre rib right through to the shoulder block. All of which effectively means that there is more rubber making contact with the road surface. As a result in the wet, this all helps to lessen aquaplaning. Moreover, the continuous centre section helps to sharpen up steering responses and the large shoulder area ensures that the tyres can cope with more aggressive driving. The problem is however, that grippier rub

ber is often softer and wear rates can some times be quite alarming. If the latest Eagle FI could fulfil its manufacturer’s claims of pro viding ultimate grip while at the same time, offering acceptable wear, it would certainly represent a real step forward. Even before we started the test, one design

feature we particularly liked on the FI Eagle was the flange that protrudes over the edge of the wheel rim in order to protect it from curb- side damage. An excellent feature for drivers of cars that wear expensive alloys. The tyre is produced in a multitude of sizes and widths from 15 in. to 21 in. and there is even a run flat

version coming out soon. Great on paper then - and in the showroom.

But how would this new breed of tyre fare around the Nurburgring? To make the whole exercise as realistic as possible for the needs of the average driver, we chose a used model and

drove it hard. For the purposes of this tyre test, we did a

day round the ‘Ring on standard rubber, then got a Goodyear supplied race team to fit the Eagle FIs to the car. Once out on the track, we found tha t the rubber worked as well as it looked. Independent tests have rated this tyre Number 1 for wet weather aquaplaning and it is easy to see why. Compared to the original fit rubber, the Eagle FI inspired a good deal more confidence in the wet. So the bottom line is that fitting the right

tyres to your performance road car should rightly be a priority. Do not just assume that the rubber you have is the rubber you need. As for the Goodyear FI Eagle GS-D3, well it got our vote. If you are going to splash out on an all-weather point to point car like the all-wheel drive Lancer Evo VIII, it almost seems crimi nal not to equip it with corresponding all-

weather rubber. LOCALLY OWNED - LOCALLY MANAGE

claims it can manage around 22 m.p.g. on the EC combined cycle. On track at the Nurburgring, I was averaging 7 m.p.g. and a considerate right foot on the cruise across the Low Countries sees an average of around 16 m.p.g. But will fuel economy worry owners who can afford £88,240 for the ‘cook ing’ 420 b.h.p. car? Probably not. Lotus Chassis Engineer Matt Beck

of a safety strut running from the rollover bar to the footwell gives terrified passen gers something to cling to. The fire extin guishing system in the footwell offers little reassurance. The 2.0-litre engine benefits from a larg

er capacity turbo-charger plus a different inlet manifold, air filter, fuelling map and exhaust system. A water injection system has also been

plumbed in that further reduces tempera tures in the intercooler and thus fires cold er, denser air into the cylinders resulting in even more power. The ride height has been dropped by 40mm and fully adjustable suspension has been fitted, although the expensive dampers may be culled from the production car by Vauxhall’s eagle eyed

bean counters. The brakes feature compe tition pads with bigger calipers and huge brake discs. The semi-slick Yokohama A048 tyres offer a good deal more in the way of ultimate grip than the standard VX220 Turbo rubber and measure a hefty 195/50/16 up front and 225/45/17 at the back. There is certainly no shortage of

grip. Customers can probably expect to pay

around £30,000 for a slightly more refined version of this ridiculously rapid car. If it is anything like this demonstrator,

it will be a giant killer the like of which we have not witnessed before. Do not lose sight of the fact that this is

not the fruits of a low-volume operation either. Vauxhall should be given huge cred it for perservering with such a specialist machine. Keep your ears to the ground. This one could be quite special.
