Mayor calls in on the elderly be aring gifts
A FESTIVE treat was in store this week for residents of Roefield Nurs ing and Rest Home. The Mayor of the Ribble Valley,
01200 444010 o m y
Coun. Alan Yearing, put a smile on the faces of elderly residents when he visited the home on Monday, bearing gifts. ■
. .. He presented residents with a tin
of chocolates, which will be shared out in the home’s communal room. Coun Yearing is in the process of
making his annual Christmas visits to every Ribble Valley Borough Council sheltered housing scheme. Roefield Nursing and Rest
Home, in Edisford Road, was added to the list, as many of its residents are well-known to Coun Yearing, as it is in the ward that he represents. Our picture shows the Mayor
with Winifred Webster and Hilary Wharton.

Warning over bogus callers
POLICE are warning elderly residents to be more vigilant after a 90-year-old woman was preyed on by bogus callers this week. The pensioner, who lives
on Brownlow Street, Clitheroe, was lured out side her house by two men who said they were from the Water Board. One of the men kept the
woman distracted while the other stole £140 of the pen
sioner’s savings. The incident happened
at 2-45 p.m. on Monday. Clitheroe Police Insp
Bob Ford warned that peo ple should never allow any one into their home with out first seeing the appro priate identification. Insp. Ford added that he

FANTASY was brought to life when Roefield Leisure Centre, Clitheroe, held a special Turbo Tots session. The class, aimed at children from walking
to school age, encourages the development of co-ordination and balance through a range of equipment. Recently, the children were given a session with a difference. Turbo Tots has been running for over four
years now, but in a pioneering move the organisers, Louise Thompson and Aimie Hamer, gave the session a theme. Inspired by the popular children’s’ book
“Bear Hunt”, by Michael Rofen and Helen Oxenbury, Louise and Aimie adapted the equipment and arranged it in a way so that it followed the story of the book. The children were able to engage with the
story and, through the specially arranged equipment, cross rivers and fields like the book’s characters. The Tumble Tots Bear Hunt lasted 45
minutes, and although being originally planned as a one-off venture, organisers are hopeful of arranging another one. Child care co-ordinator Louise Thompson

th a t ’the numbers have been raised in response to the pressure on places.” A spokeswoman for Lan-
cashire County Council said that the Government’s formula for calculating school admissions had changed. The result had been that
some schools had found their admission numbers had risen, while at other schools the figure had fall en.

FORTY years ago, Tr in ity Methodist Church staged its first
pantomime, “Aladdin”. It was produced by Bertha Bradshaw
from a script written by the late Rev. Ronald Jobling, the Methodist minister
at the time. It involved more than 100 people from the church, ranging in age from four to 60-
plus. Now an annual institution in Clitheroe
and the length of the Ribble Valley, this year’s Trinity Pantomime is a 40th anniversary production of “Aladdin”, the show that started it all.
I t will be staged on January 29th, 30th
and 31st, and again on February 5th, 6th and 7th, at the Trinity Methodist Church Hall in Wesleyan Row. Also to mark the 40 year milestone, the group is holding a reunion and exhibition of memorabilia on January 17th. Trinity Pantomime stalwart Roland
Hailwood said: “We would like to hear from anyone who has been involved with any of the 40 pantomimes, either on stage or backstage. “If anyone has any posters or pho
tographs, particularly from the earlier shows, we would love to use them in our exhibition. All lent items will be returned as soon as the 2004 pantomime is fin ished.
“Letters and e-mails of recollections or
greetings would be welcome - then we can share these with those that can attend on
the day. “We have several families which have
had four generations involved in this very traditional part of Clitheroe’s life, but those who only did one show are just as important.” Anyone with items to lend for the exhi
bition or wanting more information can telephone Mr Hailwood on 01200 424240 or 422446, or alternatively send an e-mail to:
