Whalley Under Us . . . . . . . 2 Grassington.......................0 WHALLEY recorded a third successive win with their best performance of the season against a strong side. The locals controlled the

game from the off, confidently passing the ball and creating a number of chances.. Only fine goalkeeping and a

number of near misses kept the first half goal-less. After the break, Whalley .

The locals were under par in

themselves with greater pur pose after the break, and two swift strikes from Arran McCarthy turned the tide. Gary Micallef was then on

hand to make i t 3-1 when McCarthy’s free kick came back off the bar. Rovers pulled one back, but

the Pumas finished off the vis itors when Micallef, who earli er missed a penalty, got his second, and William Hender son added a fifth. _

Ribble Valiev sports round-up

Improved displays rewarded

IMPROVED performances were rewarded at the Clitheroe and District Swimming Club’s December Time Trials at Ribblesdale Pool. The trials were well attended, and

many personal bests were recorded. Certificates for Most Improved

Swimmer were awarded to: 25m - Freestyle, Abigail Parkington; Breast stroke, Abigail Beckett; Backstroke, Oliver Rigg; Butterfly, Melissa Cox. 50m- Freestyle, Sarah Green; Breast stroke, Alex Bibby; Backstroke, Kris tian Holden; Butterfly, Mark Lemont.

Line-up decided BLACK Bull and Craven Heifer pro gressed in the Ribble Valley Ladies’ Darts Association Pat Dobson Memo rial. Brown Cow were Black Bull’s vic

tims, losing 7-1, while Craven had a tougher tie, edging past Catholic Social Club 7-5. High scores on the night saw R. Dewhurst hit 114,112 and 111, while P. Dewhurst and L. Cook both hit a ton.

Best win so far CLITHEROE Badminton Club’s B team recorded their best result of the season last week. . The side beat Blackburn and Dis

trict League Second Division leaders St Philip’s 11-5. Damian Evans was the star per

former, winning all four of his games, with Julie Pym in the mixed doubles, and Peter Woods in the men’s pairs. The other successful partnerships

were Tony Bush and Liz Maskell in the mixed, and Sheila Perry and Jane MacEwan in the ladies’ doubles. The win puts Clitheroe back in the promo tion chase at the mid-point of the sea son. The A team also enjoyed a solid win, beating struggling BAe Systems 124.

FOR the second time in two matches it took Grindleton until half-time to come into their own after suffering a two-goal deficit by the interval. The locals let their Craven and Dis

trict Football League Second Division rivals dominate play throughout'the first half after conceding after 10 and then 30 minutes of the game After the break, man of the match

Daniel Fawcett led a revival after he converted a penalty following a hand ball by a McBrides defender. And then five minutes later, Fawcett scored again to put the sides level. This match produced a much more

determined performance from Grindle ton in the second half, but they just could not find a winner.

Legion A beat Brown Cow

JACK SWARBRICK scored his first ever hat-trick for the Wanderers with some neat footwork in the penalty area. Sam Burgess got the other goal from a right wing cross, while defender Thomas Sutton was named man of the match by the referee as Wilpshire con tinued their winning streak.

Tables are turned Gargrave Reserves.......................6 Waddington Reserves.................3 FOLLOWING a great comeback at Barnoldswick last week, the tables were turned as Waddington were caught napping by Gargrave. Waddington took the lead through

Ian Hopcroft, only for Gargrave to draw level minutes later. Paul Tierney then scored a second

for the locals before half-time, and Bobby Walker added a third just after the break. However, with jus t 25 minutes

remaining, Waddington hit the self destruct button and conceded five goals in quick succession. This was a hard lesson, but one that

needs to be taken into the next game away to Oakworth Juniors on Satur day, meet 12-15 p.m. at the Wadding ton Arms.

Young side beaten Tarleton....................................28 Clitheroe Cavaliers................ 8 A YOUTHFUL Clitheroe second string made the short trip to Preston where they were entertained by a strong and well drilled Tarleton side. With a travelling squad of 18 play

ers, skipper Mick Rowley had the plea sure of starting the match with three reserves, and judging by the frantic opening exchanges, all three would be needed. Playing against the wind, Clitheroe

were pinned back inside their own half for long periods and it was no surprise when the home team opened the scor ing with a converted tiy. Two further tries late in the period gave Tarleton a 21-point lead. The break came just in time for the

Cavaliers, captain Rowley inspired the team insisting caution was thrown to the wind, and the ball should be run at every opportunity. Clitheroe opened the second half with a tremendous for ward drive that took play deep within the Tarleton 22, where back row mae stro Tim Hitchen took full advantage to claim an excellent try. ’ The pack was now in control and

securing plenty of possession, hard running by Michael Thomber, Ian Fielding, Alex Haugh and Mark Curr phy ail came to nothing as the home ride defence held strong. Time and again scrum half James

McAloon encouraged his team for ward, but he unfortunately incurred the wrath of the referee after an uncharacteristic outburst, resulting in a 10-minute cooling off period for the effervescent McAloon. Down to 14 men, Rowley stepped

up to show the way with a splendid 60m drop goal, but that was the final time the Cavaliers troubled the scorers.
