because customers opted for more modest motive power it did not always mean that they wanted their cars equipped like a Bulgarian thrift store. The latest Passat Highline mod els rectify that imbalance with a decent roster of standard kit for surprisingly modest prices. Let us face it - as soon as we drop into a car
of the Passat’s ilk, the first thing we check for is the seating trim. If it is cloth trim, it smacks of Berlin taxi but if it is leather then you have that authentic Captain of European Industry feel. The Highline does not disappoint in this respect and with prices starting at £16,562 for the 2.0-litre petrol saloon, you will not need the amply padded salary of a Euro commis sioner to get behind the wheel. Volkswagen claims the Highline offers a
hefty £1,780 of extras over and above the SE model on which it is loosely based, but refer to the price lists and you will discover that it only carries a £150 premium. This must surely make it one of the most attractive value edi tions about. These cars are designed to appeal more to the private buyer and there is little doubt that the Passat Highline would make a very satisfying family saloon. Additional equipment also includes unique Michigan 15 in. alloy wheels, rear parking sensors to ease you into tight city bays, heated windscreen washer jets and heated front seats. This equipment is offered on top of the
standard complement of equipment already boasted by the Passat SE model. This includes anti lock brakes, electronic stability control, Climatronic air conditioning, a CD autochanger, twin front, side and curtain airbags and remote locking with immobiliser. I t was not long ago that a big German saloon with this level of trim would command com fortably in excess of £35,000 but even the top- of-the-range Highline TDI130 turbo-diesel estate with the optional automatic gearbox only just breaks the £20,000 barrier.

are £16,917 for the TDI100 manual and £17,837 for the more powerful TDI130 manu al. Should you want to specify this car with a five-speed Tiptronic gearbox instead, you will, need £19,217. Shared with Audi, these two 1.9-litre power plants slot in just below the 150 b.h.p. V6 TDI engine th a t , priced from £21,465, is intended for better-heeled Passat buyers. Both are developments of existing units, the 100 b.h.p. engine replacing the old 90 b.h.p. unit and the PD 130 replacing the previous 115 b.h.p. power plant. Although the power increases may sound slight, the on-the- road improvements are surprisingly great, with significant increases in torque and perfor mance on offer. This is particularly true of the entry-level TDI PD 100 model. Thanks to PD (Pumpe Dtise) technology, Volkswagen’s engi neers have managed to achieve impressive per formance figures, with 60 available in 12.4 sec onds on the way to 119 m.p.h. Yet fuel con sumption has also improved: expect over 51 m.p.g. in normal use. Given that in normal conditions, you will not want to go much faster than that, you might question the wis dom of paying more for the TDI PD 130 model. Here, you can expect 60 in 9.9 seconds on the way to 129 m.p.h. Fuel consumption is not much different (expect 50.4 m.p.g. on the combined cycle). Engines aside of course, the recipe is just as
you will find i t in any of the latest Passat models. Which means you are buying into a class-leading medium-range family saloon or estate with the best build quality in the class.

heads, its lines resembling a rather sleek er Hyundai Getz. I t is certainly a good deal easier on
the eye than the Multipla, a car that melded design brilliance to hugely unconventional looks and which failed to net the sales in this conservative mar ket that it deserved. Fiat has rightly chosen to adopt a
more sober approach with the Idea, slot ting the car into the range somewhere
just above the Punto line up. Think of i t . as being to the Punto what a Ford Focus C-MAX is to a Focus hatchback and you will probably get the gist of it. No, it does not offer any additional seats but you can pull some intriguing moves with the seats you do get - 32 of them to be precise. • The rear seats are split 40-20-40 and
can move back and forth - either togeth er or individually, prioritising either leg room or luggage space. The seat backs can also be reclined for comfort which is a distinct rarity at this
price point. The rear seat backs can fold forward as does the front passenger seat to allow you to carry some very long items. You can even fold all the seat backs flat to create a double bed effect. The Idea has the pick of the Punto’s
engine range and plucks two of the best in its 94 b.h.p. 1.4-litre petrol unit and 70 b.h.p. 1.3-litre Multijet turbo-diesel. Of the two engines the Multi jet is where, the smart money goes. The Idea might be difficult to cate
gorise but its significance is very easy to grasp.

and a sprint to 60 m.p.h. in 11.2 seconds th a t would be respectable for a manual engined compact 4x4 but even better when you consider th a t all Outlanders are equipped with an INVECS-II automatic gearbox. The big flaw in Mitsubishi’s marketing
plan for this model appears to be the lack of a diesel version, but the Outlander has something of an ace in the hole in the form of Dual Fuel versions which run not only
on regular unleaded but also have the capacity to run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Priced at £1,000 above the price of the normal cars, these offer huge fuel sav ings — at least until the Chancellor decides to ‘review’ the duty payable on LPG. For the time being at least, you get diesel style ‘ fuel bills with the smoothness and power of a petrol engine. The Outlander is the first all-new Mit
subishi model to be launched across Europe since 2000 and it is a hugely signif icant car for the Japanese company. Just as well that it looks a winner then. Early sales figures suggest th a t the Outlander will steamroller Mitsubishi’s admittedly mod est targets but industry experts have raised an eyebrow at the success of this bold vehi cle. As the first of 14 new models over the next five years, the Outlander is taking the Mitsubishi brand into new territory.
