The seats have been beefed up a little with added bolstering at the sides and under the thigh and the X- Trail now features upright can holders as opposed to the horizontal holders used in the previous version. The 112 b.h.p. diesel engine has been replaced by a far more satisfying 136 b.h.p. unit pur­ loined from the Nissan Almera and the 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines carry on as before. The best just got better. Will it sell? It

litre or 3.0-iitre six-cylinder model. . Yes,'they drank fuel like an unplugged


bath but there would be little doubt where you stood in the pecking order. All that has changed now. With bigger and better, four-cylinder engines available,; a big petrol six seems a virtual irrelevance.


• That’s what Toyota would assert in favour of its 2.4-litre Avensis model that acts as the range flagship. With a punchy 161 b.h.p. direct injection ‘four’ under the bon­ net, it is more than enough to satisfy most. The Avensis 2.4Di will zip to 60 m.p.h.
