Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, November 6th, 2003 13 Cash cheer from mobile phones ~— . i, ' • rj 4a?jSl

OLD mobile phones lying unwanted in homes across the country could be put to good use, bringing some Christmas cheer to an older person. Charity Help the Aged, together with

Leeds and Holbeck Building Society, is call ing on anyone with a redundant mobile to donate it during November to any of the charity's shops or a Leeds and Holbeck branch. Each re-useable phone will bring in funds for the charity. Sheila Lutchanah for Help the Aged says:

They contain potentially hazardous sub stances which could harm the local soil and water if they end life on a landfill site. But what is rubbish to you and harmful to the environment could be a tremendously valu able form of income to us." Even very old or broken handsets, chargers and accessories can be put to good use. If they have no value on the second-hand phone market, they are sent to a specialist for safe recycling where some materials are put back into use. For more information, visit:

FOR most of us, Christmases to remember are the ones when the unexpected happens - an amazing gift, the surprise return of a long-lost friend...or a special holiday in a

place you always wanted to see. And for those determined to escape the

home-based celebrations of turkey trimmings and gifts around the tree in 2003, the holiday choice looks superb. Whether you want to eat mince pies in

front of an open fire in a sweet country cot tage, trek on Mount Everest or take a sleigh ride with Rudolph in Lapland, there is some thing for you. Some hotels are offering a Christmas Eve

champagne reception, mulled wine and mince pies after Midnight Mass, Christmas gifts, breakfast and traditional lunch on Christmas Day, and Boxing Day meals. Alternatively, you could try a country cot

tage or even a country manor. You can see Dame Judi Dench in Stratford

in “All’s Well That Ends Well” or you can chill out in a Thai spa courtesy of the long-haul tour operators. Why not hit the ski slopes? A stay in the

picture-book Bernese Oberland village of Kandersteg includes horse-drawn sleigh ride,

torchlit stroll with Gluhwein, fondue evening with musical entertainment, gala dinner on Christmas Eve and children’s gifts from Father Christmas. Celebrate French-style in a Normandy

house with traditional part-timbered facade, glazed fireplace and forest views outside the village of Blangy-le-Chateau. Or take a cruise in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean. You have to be 50, or travel with somebody

of that age, to join Saga’s four-night package in Budapest, from December 23rd. That includes half-board accommodation in a four- star hotel, a tour of the Pest area of the city and a Christmas Day Danube cruise.

You can see the opera in Paris or take a

drive in South Africa and spend two nights in a nature reserve. See the magic of Prague, enjoying the

Christmas markets in Old Town Square and the hot wine and warm food in Wenceslas Square. Follow the Inca trail with a 15-day family trip including the arid highlands around Are-

quipa. Fly cheap to Australia - the new European

Airlines service" to Sydney, launching on November 14th, leaves Gatwick on December 19th and 26th on a £499 return , which includes a free flight to Alice Springs or Dar win on the new Virgin Blue service. Hit the hippy trail in India or lie back in

Goa. Have lunch in London’s west end or dine on the beautiful island of Madeira. See Santa in Lapland or what about climb

ing Mount Everest? Himalayan Kingdoms offers treks of 14 days or more from £1,695. The target is Everest Base Camp at 18,000 feet. Top-of-the-market tour operator Elegant

Resorts offers the Ultimate Christmas Gift - for £7,955. You get a private jet flight on December 27th to Dubai, Rolls-Royce limou sine transfer, and seven nights’ luxury living in the celebrated Burj A1 Arab Hotel, one of the most famous in the world, with round-the- clock butler service and undersea dining.
