“Heart of Lancashire Appeal”, the scheme is run by Lancashire Ambulance Service. I t provides defib rillators to be kept in iso lated or rural locations and trains a local group of peo ple in how to use the life saving machines. These “First Respon

replica 1930s-style delivery van that is set to become a familiar sight as it trans ports barrels to pubs and clubs the length of the Val ley, and further afield. Nicknamed “Galloping

by time-served craftsmen in small, independent brew eries. But concealed beneath
the bonnet is a modern 2.5 litre Ford engine capable of getting Gurtie quickly and reliably to her delivery des tinations and home again. The custom vehicle was
originally built in 1986 for Coca Cola, bu t has now moved upmarket into real ales. Galloping Gurtie has already been to Wakefield,
Huddersfield and Preston, as well as making her regu lar local rounds. Mr Baker commented:
“I would love to deliver beer on a dray, bu t th a t wouldn’t be very practical on the M62 so this is the next best thing and cus tomers so far have all been really pleased to see her.” Our picture shows Mr

year increased financial compensation should be given to passengers who are denied board ing due to over-booked flights. Passengers on short flights will receive
around £170 compensation - this is an extra £70 on top of current rates - while compensa tion on longer flights will be doubled to around £420. This comes after findings that each year one quarter of a million passengers are refused
boarding when they arrive to check-in lor a flight. This is because airlines often over-book flights in a bid to make more money as they expect some passengers not to turn up for flights. However, occasionally too many peo ple turn up for flights and so some people are refused boarding. The new law also means that for the first
time passengers whose flights are delayed or cancelled will be entitled to compensation for their inconvenience. This extends to charter flights as well as scheduled departures. The compensation for passengers whose
flights have been cancelled will be the same as for those who have been denied boarding, as well as a choice of either a full refund or alter native flight. Travellers whose flights are delayed will not be compensated as such, although, the new law does state that they can receive a full refund if the delay is over two hours for a short flight and four hours for a longer flight. In addition to this financial compensation,
travellers who are delayed, denied boarding, or have had their flight cancelled must be pro vided with meals, refreshments and hotel accommodation if necessary. However, low cost airlines claim that these
new measures will mean th a t they will be forced to increase the price of airfares as they may have to pay compensation in excess of the price they charge for flights. Clitheroe Euro-MP Chris Davies argues
that companies have got to accept minimum standards of public services. "If low-cost airlines are here to stay, as it
looks likely, then they cannot build their busi ness on the basis of cutting comers and over booking flights," said Mr Davies.
"Customers should have the rights to fair
treatment and protection from shoddy ser vices even when they might be getting a bar gain if all goes well."
