Elderly widower, 85 died of broken heart

AN 85-YEAR-OLD man died of a broken heart just two months after his wife was fatally injured when he drove into the back of a parked

lorry. An inquest heard th a t

Allan Boucher was saved from serious injury by a dri ver’s side airbag. But his son, Nigel Bouch

er, said that his father effec tively lost the will to live fol lowing the crash in Chatburn in July in which his wife Gertrude (88), died. Speaking a fte r the

inquest, Mr Boucher said his father had never really spo ken about the accident prior to his death. “He virtually stopped eat

ing and just faded away,” said Mr Boucher. “He eventually died of pneumonia and he

-tives of the wider commu nity. In other cases, mem bers of the public who have alerted police to suspected drug dealing in their com munity have been invited to observe the raids, to see first hand that the information they provide is helping to fight the war on drugs. In charge of Monday’s

operation was Inspector Bob Ford, of Clitheroe Police. He said: “This has been

an intelligence-led operation thanks to a great deal of support from the local com munity and many of our partner organisations. “This is our first opera

tion of this kind in the Rib ble Valley and demonstrates our commitment to making a difference to people in the area.

“We have asked the pub

lic to work with us. “We have canvassed their

opinions and listened to the voice of the community. “The public has sent us a

“Mounting raids on this scale can be very disruptive and we are very grateful to local residents for their toler ance and support. “What today demon

time building up a picture of activity in the area. “Today’s operation

demonstrates our sustained attack upon crime and the causes of crime in the area. “We anticipate that the

quality of life for those living in these areas will see a marked improvement, but importantly we are working hard with our partners to ensure these improvements are sustained for everyone” The man airested in Low

Moor has since been ques tioned and charged with three offences of supplying Class A drugs. He will face those charges in court.

was just too weak to fight it. He didn’t talk about what happened but it dearly affect ed him very deeply." A s tatem en t made to

police by Mr Boucher senior before his death revealed that he had seen the lorry and low loader tra ile r parked in Clitheroe Road opposite the petrol station. “I recall seeing the lorry

parked on the left-hand side of the road and the next thing I recall is crashing into the back of it,” said Mr Boucher. “I was not being distracted at all, I think I just misjudged the position of the lorry.” Mrs Boucher, of Bowland

Court, Clitheroe, suffered multiple injuries in the crash and died eight days later. Nephew Brian Fawcett

told the inquest that he had taken his mother, Joan, to Clitheroe to visit her sister.

They had gone to a pub in Chatbum for a meal with Mr and Mrs Boucher and were driving back to Bowland Court when the accident occurred. He was following Mr Boucher’s car and told how he had seen the parked lorry a “good dis tance” ahead. “I expected Allan to

either pull to the right and overtake or stop behind and wait until the road was clear,” said Mr Fawcett. “To my horror he did neither, he just carried on and ran straight into the trailer. I remember - shouting ‘Oh no’,” he added. The medical cause of

death was bronchopneumo nia and pulmonary embolism caused by multiple injuries. Coroner Michael Singleton recorded a verdict of acciden tal death.

Eastern European gang targets shops

C L ITH E RO E police are warning local businesses to be on guard, after a group of th iev e s s to le two d ig i ta l

camcorders from a local shop. Two men and a woman

went into the Camera Shop on Castle Street on Thursday, and while the a s s is ta n ts ’ attention was diverted, stole

the camcorders valued at over £ 1,200. The cameras taken were a

silver Sony DCRPC103E, ser ial no:- S0112402937, and a sil ver Sony DCRTRV33E, serial no: S0102560021. The group is believed to be

of eastern European origin, with the first male aged 20 to 25 years, 5 f t . 10 in., had a dark spotty complexion with slicked back, black collar length hair. He had two gold incisor

teeth and a round fattish face, clean shaven. At the time, he was wearing a three-quarter length silver/grey jacke, black trousers and black slip on shoes. He also had on a gold watch, gold bracelets and gold rings. The second male was dark skinned, 16 to 17 years of age,

5 ft. 5 in., slightly built with short dark hair with a side parting and a stubbly goatee type beard. He was wearing a black leather jacket and on his right hand was a ring with a lion on. He had a mobile phone with a cover showing Caution Rating 18, as seen on film titles or video covers. The woman was of dark

complexion, 5 ft. 6 in., in her 60s with dark hair which was tied back. She was wearing a long flowery skirt and a num ber of dark coloured pullovers. A similar incident occurred

on October 23rd, when a group of seven people, again described as of eastern Euro pean origin, went into the local post-office. One female woman tried to

distract the assistants’ atten tion, while the other attempt ed to go behind the counter

and into the post-office sec tion. The group included three

males and four females with one female, in her late 50s, car- ’ rying a baby. She had silver capped bottom set teeth. A similar group went into a

pub, and one man was found upstairs in the living quarters.

DRIVERS were crying over spilt milk on a country road on Tuesday morning.

Milk spill leads to skids on road A police spokesman said th a t the milk had spilled from a

tanker at a bad bend near Wigglesworth and had made the road

greasy. Cars then passing the scene skidded, resulting in dam age to the vehicles. Fortunately no injuries were caused by the collisions and the

spillage was cleared up with the assistance of the county envi ronment agency workers.
