RIBBLE VALLEY win ners in th e an n u a l L an cashire Best-Kept Village competition were present ed with their awards in a special ceremony a t Bar

ton Village Hall. Claiming top honours were

West Bradford, winner of this year’s Best-Kept Small Vil lage title, and Harrop Fold, winner of th e B e s t-K ep t Hamlet class. Both Bashall Eaves and Walker Fold were also highly commended in the hamlet class. A host of other Ribble Valley

communities featured in the competition’s many Certificate of Merit classes, reinforcing the area’s reputation as one of the most beautiful and well-tended parts of England. Trophies, commemorative

plaques and certificates were presented to winners at the cer emony, with this year’s compe tition jointly sponsored by Lan cashire Tourism Partnership and Lancashire County Coun cil.

The Finals Judge was Profes

sor John Moveley, Principal of Myerscough College, who visit ed the finalists during the sec ond half of August before choosing the winners in each category. Mr Anthony Goldstone,

chairman of the Lancashire Tourism Partnership, said: “The positive benefits from tak ing part in the Best-Kept Vil lage Competition are clear. “People are attracted to Lan

cashire by beautiful villages and hamlets, which injects money into the Lancashire economy. Leader of Lancashire County

Council, Coun. Hazel Harding added: “Across the county we have so many wonderful and welcoming villages. “This year many of the cate

gories had more entrants than last year, which shows how peo ple are regaining a strong sense of pride in where they live and

Lancashire as a whole.” 'Waddington’s Coronation

Gardens won the class for any other special feature, while the public toilets in Avenue Road, Hurst Green, were voted the best-kept in Lancashire and those in Sabden were highly commended. Hurst Green also won the

class for best-kept bowling greens and surrounds, while Ribchester’s St Peter and St Paul RC Church won the places of worship class, in which Clitheroe’s St Mary Magdalene Church was highly commend ed.

Knowle Green won the class

for best-kept public halls, with Chipping and West Bradford both highly commended, and Waddington’s Hospital Cot tages won the sheltered accom modation class. The Buck Inn and the Duke

of York, both a t Grindleton, and the Lord Nelson, near Old Langho, were all highly com mended in the village pubs and inns competition, while the Mytton Fold Hotel, at Langho, was highly commended in the hotels and restaurants class. Parish notice boards a t

Grindleton and Read were highly commended, as was Hackings Caravan Park at Old Langho and the war memorials at Hurst Green and Read. Ribchester playing field and

the village hall playing field at West Bradford were highly commended in their class, while several Ribble Valley schools were highly commended in the schools and grounds section of the competition. Warning to on-line banking customers

ONLINE banking customers are being alerted to a new scam. . Lancashire County Council

Trading Standards are warning con sumers who use computer banking or other online payment facilities to beware of the latest e-mail scam. Fraudsters have been sending

online banking customers an e-mail which appears to come from their bank, and seeks to get them to "con firm" their account security pass words, pin numbers and other details. These are then used to access and steal the customer’s iden

tity. Trading Standards have already

received several inquiries from con sumers who have received these e- mails and become suspicious. Cus tomers of any bank or building soci ety offering online services could be

targeted and although these banks are increasing their security, it is important that consumers do not reveal the access codes to their account in response to any e-mail or telephone requests. County Coun. Doreen Pollitt,

deputy leader of Lancashire Coun ty Council, said: "Consumer frauds via the Internet are growing and this latest scam is aimed at fooling people into revealing their security access codes to steal from their accounts or to buy goods online. "The fraudsters can operate from

anywhere in the world via the inter net and consumers should never give PIN or other computer securi ty codes to any other person. Banks and other genuine organisations will never ask for these security codes."

There are many reasons why people choose to live on the Costa Blanca and here are just some of them. It has an average of 320 sunny days per year. The warm Mediterranean washes over the beaches to the East and South, introducing a steady flow of warm air overland. Mediterranean summers are hot and win ters, unlike back home, are mild. The sun performs daily miracles, easing the aches, pains and stiff joints associated with wetter climates. For another reason, the cost of living is much lower, and therefore your money goes much further offering a higher standard of living. For example, the aver age cost of running a home in Spain including water, electricity and gas, local rates, community fees (up keep of swimming pools, gardens, lighting etc) home and contents insurance is just £20 per week. A local restaurant menu of the day, 3 course meal with wine and bread is around £5. The area is agricultural and has little industry. The air is clean and is recommended by the World Health Authority as one of the healthiest places in the world to live. The standard of properties is high, backed by the builders’ 10 years guarantee. They represent excellent investment and value for money. Properties and land are freehold and have nothing to do with timeshare and the associated sales pressure. The Costa Blanca has extremely good medical facili ties, with local clinics and a brand new fully equipped hospital that rivals the facilities in the UK. Medical treatment to retired British people in Spain is free. The area is easily accessed from the UK, with Ali cante or Murcia airports being just over 2 hours flying time away from most UK airports. MASA International is one of Europe’s leading villa sales organisations with over 20,000 homes already sold since 1981. We can help you from the very first enquiry at our exhibition to the registering of your Title Deeds in Spain. We can help you open a bank account, arrange standing orders, buy furniture and deal with any formalities required by the Spanish authorities. MASA International has a complete af ter-sales service department to help you at any time in the future. Come and meet the local MASA International repre sentatives at your local exhibition for a friendly and informative discussion and to.recieve your free Masa information video.

Just watch you are not being misled by your own rather vague hunches, or indeed by information coming from others.
