SET in Victorian England, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a team of heroes recruited by the Government to foil the fiendish plans of a criminal mastermind known as The Fantom. The evil genius is intent on setting country

against country to start a world war and profit by selling his weapons to all sides. Only the League of Extraordinary Gentle

men can stop him, using a variety of comic book special powers or just plain heroism. The League is headed by legendary adven

turer Allan Quartermain, played by Sean Con nery. Other members, coming alive from the pages

of Victorian literature, include Dr Jekyll and his alter-ego Mr Hyde, Captain Nemo, the invisible man, vampiress Mina Harker, Ameri can Secret Service Agent Tom Sawyer and the virtually immortal Dorien Gray. Given their mission, the League must travel

to Venice where the Fantom plans to blow up a meeting of world leaders, and so the adventure begins. If you do not take this too seriously, it is a

thoroughly enjoyable romp, a comic book caper with a Victorian flavour and some superb spe cial effects. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Question: What was the name of the British secret agent, with the number 007, played by Sean Connery?

MANY people will know Steel Magnolias as the 1989 film directed by Her bert Ross and starring such household names as Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Julia Roberts and Olympia Dukakis. But the film version was

based on a successful stage play by Robert Harling th a t receives a well- deserved airing in Black burn this month. The Revidge Fold Ama

teur Dramatic Society is staging the play in the United Reformed Church Hall, on Shear Brow, from November 12th to 15th. I t follows several years in

the lives of women who reg ularly see each other in the beauty salon in their small Louisiana town. The story deepens as one

of the women’s daughters suffers failing health and many years’ worth of stored tru th s are shared between the strong charac

ters. This is a story th a t can make you cry a t one minute and laugh out loud the next. Above all i t is about true life happenings.

Nightly performances

start at 7-30 p.m. and tick ets are available by phon ing 01254 54986. They cost £3.50p for adults, £3 con-

cessions and £2 for chil dren. Our picture, shows the

cast of Revidge Fold’s pro duction of Steel Magnolias.

A difficult play with a first-class cast

CARYL CHURCHILL’S play “Top Girls” is demanding, difficult and great. Churchill is one of the leading

women playwrights of recent years, renowned for her challenging approach to structure and dialogue. True to form, “Top Girls” makes many demands of the audience. The chronology differs, so the action

moves backwards and forwards and the author has developed a technique of overlapping dialogue - unsettling for those accustomed to conventional dra matic exchanges. I have to admit that I found two characters speaking at once disconcert

ing and I question the validity. Never theless, there is so much to praise. I think it is a compendium of women’s experience, but I am not sure because Churchill gives few signals about her attitudes. The spectacular opening scene of a

wine-fuelled dinner party, hosted by protagonist Marlene (impressively per formed by Kate Williamson) involves five female historical/fictional charac ters discussing their experiences from the submissive to those who succeed in the male-dominated world. The next acts move into a bitingly

realistic world of Marlene’s female employment agency and finally her

home, where she, her sister and her unacknowledged daughter struggle with their heritage. The excellent all-female cast each

take on two or three roles. Leah Muller is impressive as Lady Nijo, the Japan ese courtesan, and the desperate teenager Angie, matched by Sophie James as the explorer Isabella Bird, job seeker Louise and Marlene’s sister, Joyce. I intend to read the script to further

my understanding and I definitely intend seeing this play again. "Top Girls” runs a t the Library

Theatre, Manchester, until Novem ber 15th.
