easy catch to Martin Briggs at square leg, reducing the visitors' to 28-3. Naeem Ashraf and
Bolton set about repair ing the damage with.a patient stand of 33, with Andrew Ainsworth breaking the partnership with the prized wicket of the pro, caught at cover by Robert Lloyd for 18. He followed this with
Kennedy in his next over, Nawaz taking a good slip catch. Howard and Braith
waite came into the attack and kept the stranglehold on the bats men, Andy Robinson caught behind by Philip Hall off Howard at 95-6.
Gary Bolton had
looked insecure in his innings and but was looking ominous as he reached 40 when the skipper had him caught in the deep by Martin Peel. The innings stumbled
to 127 as Lloyd caught Hayes for 16 off Howard, and Hall stumped Bald win and Logan to claim the two bowling points for the home side. The target of 128 was
never going
to.be easy against the bowling of Ashraf, and so it proved as he quickly claimed the wickets of Gladwin (16) and Peel (0). However, Wanderers were rescued by a stand
of 57 between Nawaz and Howard which swung the game in their favour, the ex-skipper eventually bowled by Sudnik for 21. The pro was playing
circumspectly and the middle order chipped in with with stands of 19, 11 and 18 to take the home side to victory. Nawaz, whose 69 not
out was one of his b e s t . innings, a sensible knock of the highest calibre and picking off shots perfect ly to secure the win. Saturday's match with • contenders
title
Bamoldswick was washed out, after a huge thunderr storm wiped out the Rib blesdale innings on 74-2.
Clitheroe enjoy maximum weekend
A WONDERFUL double victory for Clitheroe saw them take the maximum 14 points from the two weekend Jen nings Ribblesdale League encounters. And this included a fabulous win at
the Applegarth on Sunday against high flying Earby, almost surely denying them a chance at this year's title. That victory was made all the more
sweet with captain Neil Bolton ending the match with the fabulous bowling fig ures of five wickets for four runs, from just four and a half overs! And his two batting knocks of the
weekend, out on both days for 13, were certainly not unlucky for his side, as they look to qualify for the LCB Knockout Cup by ending the season with a top four finish. Saturday's match at home to
Oswaldtwistle Immanuel started well, with the visitors' batting first and losing wickets at regular intervals. No player in the side managed a score
in the 20s, with just four men entering into double figures. Professional Rob Ashton went early
for 17, after his fellow opener .Burton had been caught by Andy Bums for 13 off the bowling of Neil Bibby. Sadiq also went for 13, trapped lbw by
professional Dexter Fitton, sandwiched between two ducks from Mawdsley and Payne. A. Dignan and Moorby both also went
without registering a score, as E Dignan (18) and Nicholson (13 not out) were the only other main contributors. Clitheroe didn't start their reply any
better as Stephen Bishop went lbw for eight, before professional Fitton'and Andy Bums both went without scoring. Captain Neil Bolton fell for 13 before
namesake Mark fell for 14, also caught lbw, this time by the pro Ashton.
A terrific half-century final stand, saw
the Coulter brother, Simon and Matthew bring the innings home with taiocks of 36 and nine respectively. This was only a warm-up, however, to
Sunday's action, in which title contenders Earby were swept aside at Chatbum Road. After electing to put the visitors into
bat, Clitheroe got to work disposing of the top order. But the presence of professional Alex
Scholefield proved to be harder than expected as he stayed at the crease for much of the innings, and was Earby's reason why the match wasn't over long before it eventually was. His fabulous knock of 73 was the high
light of an innings, in which five players departed for a duck, and three more reg istered single figure scores. The bowling of captain Neil Bolton
was the reason for this, coming in for 15- year-old James Warburton after the
youngster had bowled his allocated five overs. The youngster did claim the prize
wicket of Scholefield, after he had him caught at point by Andy Bums. This sparked a massive collapse, in
which the viators' fell form 95-1 to 124 all' out, with Bolton and professional Dexter Fitton the chief wicket-takers. Clitheroe's reply took time to get
underway, but after Bolton (13) Bishop (2), and ducks from Fitton and Mark Bolton, the fifth wicket stand of 97 between Andy Bums and Simon Coulter proved to be the match-winner. After being 23-4, Clitheroe took the
score to 121 before Coulter was out for 32; j ■ ■ Burns went for a magnificent 68, to
leave Matthew Coulter and Mark Harg reaves to seal victory with just under three overs remaining.
Whalley’s mixed weekend
WHALLEY distanced themselves from the b o t tom group in the Jennings Ribblesdale League table after a resounding four-wicket, win over fellow strag glers Edenfield on Sat urday. Captain Jason Smith
was the hero of the after noon, recording bowling figures of 4-31 before top-scoring with the bat, ending on 36. After inserting the vis
itors at Station Road, Whalley took time to break down the Eden field openers, but did so in ,the 11th over with a caught and bowled dis missal of Bums courtesy of captain Smith. Visiting paid man Ian
Mitchell didn't last long as he was caught by the captain o f f O'Neill for four, before fellow opener Williams was needlessly run out for an impressive 36.
Wickets began to turn-
ble at regular intervals, with only middle order • batsmen Storey entering .; into double figures as he was caught by Whalleyi professional Neil Cord- ;- ingley off .Simon Gorton- for 14. • Smith added 'three
innings to give Whalley the full seven points,
more wickets to his tally,., as Edenfield crumbled from 87-5 to 105 all out, with the home side mop- • ping up the tailenders with little fuss.. •. ■ Opener Martin Davies’ .
started; the. Whalley fightback and:he was to end there, as .well as he . was to take his side to,, victory almost single- handedly. • . But for fellow opener
Mark Whelan (23) and captain Smith (36) the remainder of the innings - took a dramatic twist as three players were out fo r . a duck, and one for just a single.
• But Davies (35 not
out) along with John Kearsley saw out the .......1L. . .
cs Sunday's trip to Marshfield to play Settle was a different affair, as ' the title contenders brushed aside the visi tors by four wickets. • Whalley's cause wasn't helped by Grace retiring hurt early on for a single, but despite Lee Kearsley (39), professional Cord ingley (33) and Mark Whelan (35) all posting respectable scores, the rest of the team faltered to amount just 10 runs between them. ■ ; Whalley ended on 119- 8, and after taking the early wicket of Canaway • (7), things never looked like turning in their favour.. •
'v Professional S tu a r t : Hornby top-scored with 38, before brother Keith saw out the innings with just two balls to spare to end hopes of a weekend double for Jason Smith's ■ side.
"...- v r - . eskr eliisDQltMfeastlaMfesiiews.c a* However, Warren Eastham and
Michael Whalley carried the Read ship home, both finishing with unbeaten half-centuries after pounding the Bamoldswick attack for regular trips to the boundary. With Cherry Tree's loss at Rib
blesdale Wanderers, Read are now five points clear at the top of the table, with Saturday’s trip to Pre ston Old Road surely a title decider with just three games to go.
