WHEN the President of Russia sudden ly dies, a man whose politics are virtually unknown succeeds him.
. The change in political leaders sparks
paranoia among CIA officials, so CIA director Bill Cabot recruits a young ana lyst Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) to,supply
insight and advice on the situation. Then the unthinkable happens: a nuclear bomb explodes in Baltimore and Ameri ca is quick to blame the Russians. What they don't realise is terrorists,
bent on provoking open war between the two nations, are behind it all. The ques tion is whether Ryan will be able to con vince CIA director William Cabot (Mor gan Freeman) that the Russians are not to blame and stop a nuclear holocaust.
Question: On which country was the first nuclear bomb dropped in anger?

•modern ballet being staged in the North
■ West next month. One of four works
being performed by the Rambert Dance Com pany is "Ground Level Overlay" by American choreographer Merce Cunningham, who cre ated the ballet in 1995,
•using the computer pro gramme LifeForms. The intricate work for
15 dancers is regarded as one of Cunningham's finest and is performed to an extraordinary score for 10 trombones recorded in the empty water tank with a 45- second reverberation. The recording is
enhanced by the live playing of conch shells strategically placed around the auditorium, to create an ethereal
effect. The programme also includes the dra matic "Hurricane" by Rambert's artistic direc tor Christopher Bruce, who retires at the end of the year after eight years with the company. They will also include "Study from Blackbird"
by Czech choreographer Jiri Kylian and "The Parades Gone By", a: theatrical pastiche on’ Hollywood by Lindsay Kemp. The company; takes to the stage at Sal-: ford Quays on Septem ber 25th for a four-night > run.
Exciting season at Exchange
THE new season at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre promises to be as exciting as any. It opens with Othello (September 11th
to November 2nd). The Exchange is aiming for a thematic
programme that will include known plays with new writing to make good use of the adaptable Studio Theatre. Under the title of "Mandela's Land",
UK premieres of "The Dead Wait" amd "On My Birthday" give a vivid and chal lenging view of South Africa from a black and white perspective, demonstrating current issues of racial tension. The pair ing of productions continues with "Port",
the story of Rachel Keats growing up in! Stockport, a town she doesn't like, with a! family in tatters (November 30th to; November 6th) and "Habitat", by Judiths Thompson, which portrays the lives of; the residents of Mapleview Lane, who; challenge the mysterious Lewis Chance,: who has opened a care home for dis turbed teenagers in their neighbourhood; and force us all to examine our N IMBY : attitudes.
: For Christmas, Amanda Dalton has;
adapted David Almond’s "Secret Heart" (December 4th to January 18th), an inspiring story of the circus, of imagina tion and transformation.
