A CLITHEROE water- skier is spearheading a campaign against a blan ket speed ban on Lake Windermere and wants people in the Ribble Val

ley to back him. Mr Matthew Royle, (26), of

Chorley House, Clitheroe, is asking for a lakeside show of local support this weekend. He and his fellow members of the Windermere Action Force (WAF) have arranged a two- day "celebration" of Winder-; mere water sports, which is focused on providing free visi

has ever fancied a ride in a sports boat or to try their hand at water-skiing, now is the time because this week end, they can do it for free. "We have the support of

Windermere's watersports industry because if the Lake D is t r i c t ' National Park Authority gets its way and

. enforces a 10 mph speed limit on the lake, which the Gov ernment says can become a by-law in March 2005, then those working within this

industry will lose their jobs." According to Matthew, who

commutes, daily from his Clitheroe home to work at a Manchester-based public rela tions company, up to 1,000 jobs could go, denting a £20

. million revenue, raised by those who use Windermere for a range of water-based activi-:. ties. Explains Matthew (pic

tured): "Of the 15 Lakeland lakes, only Windermere is able to host sports suchas water- skiing. While it has a six mph speed restriction in certain

A59 crash adds danger action

Fatality inevitable, warns MP as he acts to do away with lethal junction by .Tim Procter

local MP Mr Nigel Evans had again demanded county council

. action on its dangers before what he fears is an inevitable fatality. ■ Many people believe that exten

sive work at the A59's junction with the roads to Sabden and Clitheroe has in effect created the blackspot. There have been problems since cen tral reservation waiting lanes were

formed. The junction has been branded

lethal" by Mr Evans. . Accidents have regularly happened

’ All three suffered whiplash injuries and were allowed home after treat-

ment. • . Mr Hargreaves was not injured, but

both cars were badly damaged. On Thursday, MP Mr Evans had

issued a statement emphasising his concern at the number of people who had spoken to him about the problems of the junction. He feels that the police action in

putting out their own signs, of a type usually used at accidents or other emergencies, speaks louder than words about their view. "I do not believe the county should

wait for a fatality before action is taken," said the MP, who feels that a roundabout or slip roads could offer a solution. In the meantime, Mr Evans is pressing for a temporary much lower speed limit, continuously enforced. O see Letters on page 10

Smash and grab bid Post Office van is attacked yesterday

THE peace of a Clitheroe shop ping street was disturbed yester day morning as an attempt was made to smash a window and steal parcels from a Post Office

van. The smash and grab attempt was

made just before 10 a.m. as the van was parked in King Street outside Byrne's off-licence and its postman driver was delivering to adjoining properties.

Early morning shoppers gasped as a

man smashed the side window on the passenger side of the Ford Transit Post Office parcels van, snatched a parcel and ran off up the street. A Post Office spokesman said a par

cel was taken from the van and they were making inquiries to discover

exactly what had been taken. Police were interviewing witnesses

trying to ascertain a description of the thief.

lakes in 1978, . we were promised that-Windermere would be kept as a sporting safe haven. Now this by-law has been passed, which threat ens to effectively take the lake away from us. I have visited Windermere since my child hood, which is when I learned to water-ski. Last year, I bought my own ski boat and I know that there are many other people who live in the Ribble Valley with boats there. I want them and any one else with an interest in supporting people's.freedbm to enjoy the lake to turn out and support the event." Through WAF, Mr Royle

has helped to collect a 25,000 signature petition against the

10 mph speed limit, a go slow which the Lake District National Park Authority sup ports because it believes that "go faster" sports are a threat to other lake users. However, among ban dis

senters on Mr Royle's side are former British Lions captain Mr Bill Beaumont and Mr Andy Mapple, a six times world champion slalom water- skier, who learned his sport on the lake. He is to fly from his home in Florida to support this weekend's event. . Anyone intending to go to Windermere this weekend can book their free sports session via the Internet by logging on to WAF's site at www.- waf.co.uk. (T280802/1)

PEOPLE who caused mayhem in a garden area at Clitheroe Castle gates were described by the Mayor this week as "mind less idiots". The scene of devastation was dis

covered on Monday morning by the M a y o r o f Clitheroe, Coun. Mrs Mary Robinson. Mrs Robinson was aghast when

she saw benches had been tipped over and damaged, a large planter had been smashed and plants and earth scattered around the area. "I immediately went to the police to

report it'.' she said. "It is just a handful of mindless idiots going around and

spoiling things for everyone else. There is no excuse for that sort of wanton damage. "They haven't achieved anything. It

is their own environment they are wrecking. "Whoever has done a thing like that

can't be in their right mind," she added.: . ■ Police are investigating the incident and are hoping witnesses will come for

ward. Ribble Valley Borough Council's

engineering manager, Mr Graham Jag- ger, said: "If we didn't have to continue paying for repairs to damage like this we would have more to spend on improvements." Our picture shows the scene at the

Castle gates which greeted the Mayor on Monday morning. (C260802/6)

Police mount search for two men in foiled bid to steal a £100,000 lorry

A DRAMATIC police search followed a foiled bid to steal a £100,000 lorry from Clitheroe on

lorry was out of sight in a compound off Salthill Road, Clitheroe. I t was unloaded and police believe it, would have been driven-far from the area and stripped for spares. Tire thieves, apparently thinking they would be undis

turbed, due to the holiday, climbed over the fencing,

■. Police later found a large

load securing strap and rope from the lorry by the com

pound gate. : They believe the thieves

were going to use this equip ment to tear open the gate, rising the vehicle's power.. But: the lorry driver

returned to the.vehicle and raised the alarm.when he saw the men. He briefly pursued one who ran off as the other

drove away in a green Citroen Xantia car. "We believe the pair were in

touch by mobile phone," says a police spokesman. "One man who may. have been involved pu shed. an o f ficer to the ground in Pimlico Road when challenged and ran off." i Police experts examined the

lorry and inquiries are going on in .conjunction with Merseyside police.
