Manager Lee Sculpher has .

already had his men back in for pre-season training for the past month and is pleased with the

way things have gone so far. Sculpher said: “Pre-season

training is not nice. Even at the top level, professional players won’t like pre-season training. “So you try and make i t as varied and as enjoyable as you

can. “I think everybody has done

very well. Obviously they will reap the rewards, as will the team.

“But everyone’s fitness levels _ ,

are quite good. I am very pleased with that. “The advantage this season

has been that most of the play ers have been away on holiday, prior to pre-season training and you rarely find that'happening

at this level. 1 , “You usually find that quite

a few of the players are going away during Jiily: and August, so that has been good.” The . Blues step-up th eir

Sculpher admitted the result of

tonight's friendly was immaterial: “Tonight is all about getting a game under the players’belts.

we will go there and try to win and play well but the result is irrelevant really. “I think the last two or three

I Topham then put on 115 in a vital partnership. Shovelton (62) was out late in the game, while Topham was unbeaten on 47 a t the end of the

allotted 45 overs. In reply, Sutton made a steady but slow start to

strong batting order. Wickets fell quickly, but Sutton tried t o

their reply-before Ah made an impact on then- keep up

with the run rate until they lost their fifth wicket. They then quickly slumped to 103-7, with Ali

claiming each victim. A further 16 runs were added before the demise

of Sutton’s final batsman as Chatburn celebrated

an excellent victory. Chatburn seconds returned to winning ways

with a 70-run victory over Ingrow St John’s sec onds. Batting first, they were given an excellent start with Simon Tomlinson scoring 65. •

Useful contibutions from Paul Craig (53) and Howard Braithivaite (28) saw Chatburn post 185

all out. In reply, Ingrow were frustrated by tight bowl

ing and excellent fielding, resulting in three run outs as they attempted to increase the pace. Russell Braithwaite (3-11), Stuart Mercer (2-

43), Geoff Lambert (1-32) and Howard Braith waite (1-5) were the Chatburn wicket-takers.

BBS ATHLETE Anna Griffiths’ latest outing was 18a at the English Schools’ Championships in Not
