..‘ Cerebral palsy, sufferer Jessica Stone " is ready to start school at Edisford next term in a new wheelchair for which family, friends arid the people of Clitheroe raised £4,000 in just a mat ter of weeks. V ’
amount needed, they have given £1,000 to V the fund to buy Rebecca Cockshott, of St
And because the fund exceeded the
Mary's RC School, Sabden, a new electric wheelchair. This was a fitting finale to a marathon fund-raising effort, because Jes sica's appeal was kick-started by £1,000 from an earlier appeal for a chair for Tina Stevenson which exceeded its target because of the generosity of Clitheroe peo ple. Jessica's mother, Mrs Katrina Stone, of
Siddows Avenue, Clitheroe, said this week: "Jessica loves her chair. I t means that when she starts school I won't have to carry her and she will have her independence." The family raised £900 on Saturday with a
big event at the Moorcock Inn, Waddington. Rebecca also made a return visit to
Clitheroe firm Affordable Mobility, who sup plied the adapted chair at a discount. Proceeds from, the event at the Moorcock
Inn will go to the Holly House centre, Rish- ton, where Jessica has been a regular atten dee. Jessica is pictured with her mother showing
Affordable Mobility's Mr Albert Lucas how well she is managing with the chair. (B110702/4)
World Gup day drinker assaulted girlfriend who gave him ‘what for’
A MAN who spent a-World Cup, football day drinking got "what for" from his girlfriend
about his drunken state. So Matthew Waterhouse hit
Diane Parker in the eye and about the head, magistrates at Blackburn heard. Waterhouse (22), of Woone
: Lane, Clitheroe, admitted assault and was fined £150 with £75 costs and £225 compensation to I Miss Parker.
' •' Mr Peter Wild (prosecuting)
said Waterhouse was making his way home after watching foot ball, but fell and hurt himself. Miss Parker came on the scene
and words were exchanged. Waterhouse punched her in the eye and about the head, leaving her with a bruised and swollen eye and a very sore left temple. Mr; Michael Blacklidge
(defending) said Waterhouse was ashamed of an isolated incident which would never be repeated. ■
Waterhouse had continued
drinking after watching a match and while making his way home had stumbled, fallen and banged his head. Miss Parker found her
boyfriend in a sorry state. "His recollection is that Miss Parker was giving him what for with regards to the state he was in and the amount he had drunk when he struck her, although he believes it was a slap rather than a punch," said Mr Blacklidge. ■ ■ ■

Student fees under fire
IMMORAL, nar row-minded . and nasty is how Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has described Government propos als for higher tuition fees and charges for students from mid
dle-class homes. Speaking at a seminar
on ethics in politics at Clitheroe Royal Gram
mar School, Mr Evans said of the Education Select Committee's sug gestion: "Penalising chil dren who come from middle-class back grounds shows this Gov ernment has run out of ideas on education. "For a p a r ty th a t
attacked top-up loans to the student grant when in opposition, it is amaz ing i t has removed the grant, introduced fees
and hoisted yet more weight on the shoulders of youngsters, whose only crime is that their parents are middle class. Clearly this idea should be ditched forthwith. I t is immoral, narrow minded and nasty." Added Mr Evans:
"MPs face many moral dilemmas, but this issue is one that should unite all decent-minded peo ple." ■
