leading show ROYAL LANCASHIRE SHOW; Astley Park, Chorley; July 26th- 28th
A PEER based in the Ribble Valley is this year’s top man at the Royal Lan cashire Show. Lord Waddington, who lives in Sab-
den, is president of the three-day show which opens to the public on a 40-acre site a t Astley Park; near Chorley, on Friday next week. The Burnley-born former MP for
Nelson and Colne and later the Ribble Valley, was Home Secretary in 1989. He accepted a peerage the following year and was made Leader of the House of Lords. He left the Government in 1992 and became Governor of Bermuda, a post he held until 1997. ' A traction engine will celebrate its 100th birthday with a visit to the show, where it started life in 1902. The Burrell engine has been bought and restored by the Cowell family of Grimsargh. The giant machine, named General Buller after a Boer War general, was one of four made in 1902 and delivered to the show when it was held at Preston. For the last 20 years it has languished in a museum in Norfolk. Mr Anthony Cowell said: "We
thought i t would be a nice idea if we could exhibit General Buller a t the Royal Lancashire Show, exactly 100 years after she first appeared there." More than 50,000 visitors are expect
ed at the three-day show. Attractions include animal classes, displays by the White Helmets Royal Signals motorcy cle display team and the Lancastrian Brigade Band. The show features 17 different seotions, including horticul ture, shire horses, cheese, honey, local produce and some of the country's top showjumpers. The show, which dates back to 1767,
attracts competitors from across the North West.

more integrity of judgement, said Mr Aylward, although Stonyhurst moved up or down on the basis of two or three pupils' results. "It is usually that sensi tive each year," he emphasised. But there were deeper concerns
other than inaccuracies in the tables, said the headmaster. "A league table obsession is essentially anti-education- al, encouraging schools to manipulate' and not treat each individual as equal ly valuable.” Only in England among UK countries was the obsession found and it did not exist overseas. "Are schools there the worse for it?
asked Mr Aylward. As recently reported, the Australian
High Commissioner, Mr Michael L'Es- trange, was the chief guest. He and his wife were presented with thank-you gifts from head boy Oliver Spratt.
