Second half display sees Clitheroe to victory

Lonsdale Wanderers .........i.;;...‘...:....'. Clitheroe'..........'.".'.'."f.'.'."'" " i2 CLITHEROE RUFC returned to league action after their enforced lay-off, due to the freezing conditions, and travelled to Kirkby

Lonsdale to play newcomers Lonsdale Wan derers. Missing four regulars, skipper Matt Dug-

dale was forced into a major reshuffle of the backs.

Brian Wood came in a t full back, allowing Andrew Burrili to take the number twelve shirt

considerable experience to the front row. The first half was a drab affair, Clitheroe

unable to keep possession for any length of time, while Lonsdale were content to keep the ball among their forwards.

often as possible was missed by the referee, and the Maroon and Golds seemed incapable of doing anything about it. Frustation spilled over towards the end of

the half when Tattersall was sin-binned for stamping at the ruck.

Despite being one man down for 10 minutes,

Clitheroe’s defence held out well, and the half time whistle came with the score a t three points each. After a dressing down from coach Greg

Nyhan, the second half saw a far better perfor mance.

t Good work midfield from Roger Holmes and

Ralph Rigby set up a ruck just inside the oppo nents half. Owain Jones released a quick pass to centre Burrili, who in turn put wingman Phil Parker outside his man. Parker still had plenty to do but pace and power saw him over in the comer for a fine try. Woodburn converted and Clitheroe had

finally taken the lead, 10-6. A second penalty increased the lead to seven

points, just before the men from Littlemoor clicked into gear for the final 10 minutes. Substitute Paul Carberry burst upfield,

aided by Dugdale and fellow prop Harry Proc tor, then released backrow man Nathan Cal- ton, who powered through to claim another five-pointer and seal a fine win.

WADDINGTON clinched a place in the Craven, and District League Second Division Cup semi final with a comfortable victory. ' The home team started well, and took the lead

just before the half-hour when Matt Pope fired home from close’range, reacting first to a rebound off the bar. The visitors squandered the chance to level things

before the break when Darren Hodges saw his penal ty kick well saved by stand-in goal keeper Peter Dugdale. In the second half, Waddington created a hatful

of chances with David Sutcliffe, Mark Harrison and Pope all missing excellent opportunities to increase the locals' lead. -

. But Wayne Boothman scored a quick brace to

make it 3-0 and offer the home team a cushion. Stephen Backhouse finished off the game's best

move to make it 4-0, after a fine flowing passing move which involved no fewer than five Waddington players, culminating in a tap-in from close range. On Saturday, Waddington return to their vital

league programme at Barrowford, kick off 2 p.m.' Players are asked to meet at the Waddington Arms at 12-45 p.m.

Grindleton go out Skipton Bulldogs ..........................................4

Grindleton...................................................... ....... 0 GRINDLETON'S first game for some time was always going to be a tough clash against last sea

son’s champions - and i t proved to be so. Having three regular players out due to holidays

and suspensions did not help them in this Craven League Premier Division Cup clash. Skipton started the better but could have found

themselves one down after 10 minutes when S. Hick- ling, the league’s second leading goal scorer, shot from long range. But with the goalkeeper beaten, his shot just went over the bar. • Skipton then went to the other end and scored

with a very soft goal. They then began to dominate and it wasn’t long before they added another to make it 2-0 at half-time. Again after the restart, Skipton were the better

team and added a third goal on the hour. This seemed to wake Grindleton up a t last, and they played some of their best football of the match but couldn't find a way through, the stubborn Skipton defence.

Skipton added a fourth goal just before full-time for a well-deserved win.

. On Saturday, Grindleton have no game and will; ' ' ; , t

hope that they can get their confidence back, as this is their worst run for many years. Grindleton Reserves are at home to Skipton Bull

dogs, and they will be hoping for better conditions after a long lay-off.

The home side took their foot

off the pedal, and United started to play the football they are capa ble of. With 15 minutes to play they

themselves won a spot kick after a handball from Waterhouse. Hodgkinson stepped up to beat

Charnley with power and preci sion. Clitheroe had chances to

equalise after that, but Craven could also have put the game firm ly out of United's reach. The game finished 3-2, with

Craven more determined on the day. They seemed .to be one step

ahead of United all afternoon, and Clitheroe will have to bounce back from this lacklustre performance if they are to win the league.
