a l e s charts tell you much about national tastes. That the


Mazda Premacy has singularly failed to dent the best-sellers list is more down to promotion than product. We cannot get


enough of aggressively- marketed Citroen Xsara Picasso, Renault Scenic and Vauxhall Zafira, but we ignore perfectly good cars like the Fiat Multiplaandthe Mazda Premacy. Think about this. The


year 2000’s biggest- grossing movie was ‘‘The Grinch”, while 2001’s best-selling album was “Hotshot” by Shaggy. Were they the best? Draw your own conclusions. Likewise, the Toyota


Corolla is the world’s favourite small car, Richard Nixon was voted in on a landslide and the most popular meal among death row inmates is double cheeseburger and fries. I rest my case. So, you did not warm


to the first version of the Premacy? You missed a trick, because Mazda’s mini-MPV has always been one of the best examples of its ilk, a smooth-driving, well- equipped and sleekly good looking offering th at in its latest guise gets all of those attrib- ‘


utes boosted yet further. Glancing a t the latest


car it is a t first difficult to even visualise the pre- 2002 car, such is its rari­ ty. Rest assured, howev­ er, the differences are there. You certainly will not


mistake new and used Premacy stock a t your Mazda dealer, due in no small part to a five- point grille, a bumper moulding with yawning orifices below the bumper and more smoothly integrated headlamps. The old car was no


duffer in the style department, but the lat­ est Premacy is a sharper looker. At the back, buyers


get slicker combination tail lamp pods with three oval lights arranged vertically. A 2.0-litre petrol ver­


sion makes an appear­ ance, and the range-top­ ping Sport variant also gets a deep front and rear air dam and subtle side skirts. Revised alloy wheels and wheel trim

designs are also on offer. There are eight


colours available, although the Sport is offered in a choice of Starry Blue Mica, Glac­ ier Blue Metallic or Eternal Red. The interior has come


in for a mild rethink, with improved seats offering better comfort and the upholstery and door trim fabrics upgraded. The entry-level GXi


versions are finished in a rather unmemorable grey hue, while the GSi is trimmed in a grey velour.' The 2.0-litre Sport is offered with a black interior.


, The 128 b.h.p. 2.0- litre engine is a decent unit,'if not the headline grabber th at Mazda needs to push the Premacy into the public eye. The £15,495 Sport


variant is probably the most purposeful-looking people carrier of any size currently available, the beaky V-shaped Mazda grille and deep spoilers giving it genuine over­ taking presence. Should your enthusi­


asm outweigh your tal­ ent, DSC stability con­ trol is fitted as standard. The 2.0-litre diesel


version carries on as before, while a 1.8-litre


version is still available in entry-level GXi trim a t an eye-catching £12,995. Mazda has had one


false s ta r t already with the Premacy, and despite its inherent com­ petence, it is hard to see the latest car blazing to the top of the charts. Stranger things have


happened, though. Cast your mind back to 1986. Thousands of you voted with your wallets to make Nick Berry’s “Every Loser Wins”, the year’s best-selling single. Suddenly the odds on


the Premacy’s success look th at much more attractive.


Extreme prejudice

PON first acquaintance with the Renault Scenic RX4 Salomon, my elderly


father noted that the alloy wheels were “hclla sick”, the trim was “way gnarly”, while the aluminium-covered door han­ dles were “like, ultra tight”, although the bull bar effect front grille was denigrated as “mongo-footed”. Actually lie said nothing of


the kind, but if it were my snow­ board-wielding 13-year-old nephew, it would have been, like, totally possible. A Renault Scenic goes extreme? This is the lexicon-mangling result. Truth is, you do not need to


be either 13 years old or have the vocabulary of an extra from a Bill ’n’ Ted film to appreciate the Renault Scenic RX4 Salomon edition. What differentiates this car


from many promotional tie-ins is that it really docs complement the Salomon brand pretty well. Turn up in Vcrbier, Tignes or


Chamonix in a Salomon-brand-. cd Laguna and you would be missing the point. Arrive in a vehicle with four-


wheel drive, enough ground clearance to airily dismiss a foot of fresh powder and moon- buggy looks and you are on the right track.

the car from the freshly sharp­ ened edges of your ski or snow­ board and a Scenic RX4 badged Salomon backpack is also included. You also get Blizzard 16in.

RX4 concept as a whole is likely to be more germane to the car’s success. If you want a 4x4 to be a tad


more macho than the fenestrat­ ed egg the RX4 resembles, then no amount of extras will tempt you into the amorphous Renault. If, on the other hand, you find


Renault’s take on the go-any- wherc mini-MPV fresh and funky, the RX4 Salomon is os good os it gets. When you have spent all day


“hucking 40-foot cliff bands” the RX4 Salomon edition is a refreshingly friendly diversion.
