some old favourites. For the next month we are running an Italian pro motion of wines I feel people should try more of because they offer such good value and quality One of the lesser-

known regions of Italy is Puglia, known-as the "cellar of Italy". This region has produced wine since ancient times under the Romans Puglia wines were exported around the civilised world. In the days of the Renaissance, Lorenzo il Magnifico found them most accept able and, after the French occupation of Italy, huge quantities were shipped to France. Pervini, a company

founded in 19-18 and orig inally grape brokers, shifted its activities and has now become one of Puglia's most respected quality producers. Our wine of the month
is Primitivo del Tarantino "I Monili" at £4.99. This red wine is dark, ruby in colour, has rich spicy notes, fairly full in the mouth and has a rounded soft finish. Alberto Pagano, 90
years old and long-time owner of two equally venerable Primitivo vine yards, used to sell his grapes until the 1998 vin tage, when he made his first wines with the help of the winemaker from Pervini and his winemak er son-in-law Mario Calo. Both wines are vinified very traditionally, but represent the new wave of quality and character that are emerging from the best sites in Puglia. Produced in very limit
ed quantities, from bush vines up to 60 years old, the Porlile is £6.49 and the Dunico is £11.89, both big powerful wines yet fine and classically struc tured, perfect with most roast meats or richly- flavoured stews
SATELLITE PICK OF THE DAY
The End of the Affair, Sky Premier, 10.15pm. Powerful, thought-provoking adaptation of Graham Greene’s intensely personal novel from writer/director Heil Jordan. Beautifully judged performances from the three leads, subtle, intelligent scripting, unobtrusive but stylish direction, and an overall coherence and sen s e of purpose makes this among the b e s t films of the director’s career. It s tar s Ralph Fiennes, Stephen Rea and Julianne Moore and i s Jordan’s m o s t su c c e s s fu l exploration of the theme of religion.
