CONWAYS: Royal Exchange,

BRADFORD play wright J.B. Priestley's "Time and the Conways" was written in 1937 as the th re a t of a second terrible war was loom ing, but it begins in 1919 when th e 'F irs t World War had just ended. The Conway family of

mother, two sons and four daughters are cele brating the 21st birth day of daughter Kay. We share their light hearted humour and their optimistic hopes and dreams for the future. The second act moves

forward to 1937 when they all gather again on Kay's 40th birthday to try to sort out the moth er's desperate financial affairs and we learn how things have turned out differently for them. The third act returns

to 1919 when we see again the young Con ways through the anguished eyes of Kay, knowing what will hap pen. Priestley denied th a t the play was pes simistic and th a t he wished to "combat the deep underlying despair about life.". Gabrielle Drake is

particularly effective as the biting, self-deluding older woman. Special credit must go

to Sarah Kirkman as Kay and to young new comer Naomi Fredrick, who was the youngest daughter Carol. This is a good play

well done and worth see ing.

‘THE KING AND I’; Opera House, Manchester; May 21 st to June 29th

THE North-West gets early pickings when one of the most colourful musicals seen since the war goes on a two-year nationwide tour. The Opera House, Manchester, is the

second stop for the lavish and award winning production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I". The show will hit Manchester

between May 21st and June 29th. I t means a big chance for Ronobir

Lahiri, who received plaudits whenever he was called on to step up from under study to play the part of King Mongkut (the part played by Yul Brynner in the film). But the producers are still keeping the

name of his Anna a secret. Most people over the age of 35

remember the famous songs from "The King and I". Songs like: "Shall We Dance?", "I Whistle a Happy Tune",

"Hello Young Lovers", "Getting to Know You", "I Have Dreamed" and "Something Wonderful" - the show had more than its fair share at the time. Lavish seems to be the word the pro

ducers are using to describe most things about "The King and I". The sets, the 240 costumes, including the world's largest crinoline, beading, jewels and silks. There are also bejewelled elephants

30ft. tall and three miles of gold tiling. The show first opened on Broadway

in 1951. The version coming to the North

West originated in Australia in 1991,' before opening for a critically-acclaimed two-year Broadway run in 1996. The show won four Tony awards and

has recently been nominated for four Olivier awards during its recent sell out run at the London Palladium.

‘BARNUM ON ICE’; Guild Hall, Preston; February 1st, 2nd and 3rd

FOR those not yet fed up with the ice and cold of winter, there is a treat at Preston Guild Hall. For three days, in February, the Russian Ice Stars

are presenting "Bamum on Ice". The production follows on from the skaters' suc

cess last year with "Phantom of the Opera". The story centres around P. T. Barnum, creator of

"The Greatest Show on Earth". The Russian Ice Stars have trained with the Russ

ian Circus to perfect superb feats never before seen on the ice, all done to a specially-composed score by Tim Duncan and Mirrortown.
