PEOPLE OF TH W klBBLE VALLEY

THEIR

DO not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain, When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night, Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.

When I spoke about the tragic death of

w r a N ’i N y A i N . But it has happened and

™ Diana, Princess of Wales, to the congre

gation last Sunday morn

ing, I suggested that anger was among the emotions which it was groper to feel. Anger thatlo beautiful, though not faultless, a life should have been cut short; anger that the country has been deprived of such a superb mother of the future king;and anger that William and Harry have been robbed of their mother

cumstances, I could not say exactly at whom the anger should be directed. I t just seemed that there had to be a better way of dealing with unwelcome photographers, than by driving at a danger ous speed. The later news, that Diana’s car was driven at 120 miles an hour along a curving road by a man who had been drinking rein forces one’s anger that such a thing could happen.

people the world over mourn the death of the lovely Diana at the age of

36. The Christian faith does . , ,

not belittle the tragedy, but it does point to a God who can bring good out of suf fering, though it is too early to say what that good will be. Maybe the memory of Diana’s compassion, warmth, sense of justice, humour, elegance and her impatience with royal stuffiness will continue to bring light into many peo ple’s lives. Maybe in some strange way her death, as well as her life, will put fresh resolve into Prince William. Dare we hope that the rest

of the royal family will learn from Diana’s humani ty and her willingness to

show emotion? I was appalled at two

aspects of the Sunday morning service at Crathie; first that William and Harry were required to attend within hours of

hearing of their mother’s death, and second that Diana was not even men tioned by name. It must have been the only church service in the coun

try not to mention her. Perhaps the occasion was handled like this so as to keep life as normal as possi ble and to avoid emotions being aroused. Obviously, as outsiders we do not have the full picture. But grief and tears are part of life. There is nothing Christian about keeping a stiff upper

lip and “being brave” at all costs. Jesus shows us a God who was unashamed to weep at the death of a friend. I f Diana’s legacy is

to show that royalty and humanity — being warm with people and touching them — can be com bined, then her life will not have been in
