A losing start for new boss
Accrington Sports 2, Swan at Whalley 1

F A mixture of old and new squad members
coupled with several absentees meant this first game was always likely to provide a genuine test of Swan’s title credentials.. Bullough Park’s infamous howling wind
was behind the Accrington side in the first half and predictably this resulted in Swan surrendering much o f the te r r i to r ia l
advantage. , Whalley’s back line held firm and despite
crosses raining in the only serious effort on goal was spectacularly tipped over by Mark Taylor in the Swan goal. Turning round goalless gave Swan plenty
of encouragement and within the first 10 minutes o f the second half Ian Barnes should have netted twice, once following good work from the otherwise frustrating
Craig Winks. Accrington Sports then started to get the

with both central midfielders scoring when given too much time and space in the area. For the remaining 25 minutes Swan tried
desperately to get back into the game. M a t t Lee came of f the bench with a point
to prove and made a sudden impact by fir ing in from 20 yards after being released

Clitheroe 3, Oldham 12 L IT H E R O E ’ S ru gb y season
opened w ith a tough Lancashire Plate tie at Littlemoor on Saturday.
But, paired up against last season’s
plate winners and league champions Oldham, i t was never going to be an
easy ride. . The Maroon and Golds started o f f in
the best possible fashion, and after a series o f ferocious forward drives the b a l l was spun out and f ly h a l f D a ve Watson nonchalantly performed his J e r ry G u s co tt im p e rs on a tion and
bagged a drop-goal to open the scoring. Unfortunately Clitheroe were knocked
out of their stride when loose head prop A ndrew "T u b b e r ” Th ornber had to leave the field with a shoulder injury, though H a r ry P ro c to r was a handy replacement to have on the bench. With neither side really able to domi
nate i t was rather against the run of play that Oldham scored with a slick back-line move. The try was converted but Clitheroe
refused to le t their supposedly more illustrious openents wrest control. W ith Jason Knowles on for the dazed and confused Dave Tattersall, still reel

fle the front row. In the'last quarter of the half Clitheroe
provided Oldham’s line with a series of short-range penalties, but came away
empty handed. The second half was just as closely con te s ted and one o f C l i th e ro e ’s b e st
moments saw wing Peter Jaques set up an excellent scoring opportunity after linking with the forwards but, although stretched, Oldham thwarted the move. Oldham struck back immediately with
some good back play for a score in the comer. This could have been the signal for a
' points-spree for the visitors, but it was the town team who threw everything
forward at the Oldham line. Although number eight Steve Taylor
and scrum-half Dave Barnes both went close, there was to be no fairytale end ing, especially as the injury curse struck again when replacement Knowles had to be replaced himself by Paul Proctor. Despite the loss the basis o f a good
squad is in place ready for Saturday’s first league fixture away at Bumage. Clitheroe: Tyas, Jaques, Greatorex,
Fielding, Ibbotson, Watson, Barnes, Th o rnb e r, T a t te r s a l l , D u b ow sk i,
