Gut the young woman of 20 who walked up the aisle with her handsome prince was des-
tined to die in tragic circumstances. Diana, Princess of Wales, touched many
hearts during her life and will be remem- ■ bered long after the bitterness of her ill- fated marriage is forgotten. July 1981: The Prince of Wales marries Lady Diana Spencer in the “wedding of the
century” at St Paul’s Cathedral. Jan 1982: Four months pregnant, the Princess crashes down a Sandringham stair

Princess is said to be suffering from post natal depression. Sept 1984: The couple’s second child,
Prince Harry, is bom. According to later speculation, this is when problems between
the couple begin. Sept 1985: Friends say the Prince Ira be
come “lonelyand eccentric”. The Princess is reported to be openly criticising her hus
band. They begin to lead separate lives. 1987: Rift in marriage becomes increasing ly obvious prompting media speculation about possible split.

Wales’s have ruled out divorce and are de termined to put up a united front.

Claims that royal aides confirmed for the first time that the marriage is in trouble are
slapped down by Buckingham Palace.

Dec 1993: A tearful Diana temporarily bows out of public life after pleading to be left alone to sort out her life. She drops most of her charity patronage. 1994: Charles described in a television doc umentary as “extraordinary” suggestions that he might abdicate, saying he has been brought up to be King. He also admits to a long term relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles. Diana spends a lonely year in which she is accused of making nuisance calls to an tiques dealer Oliver Hoare.

pounds for charity. Her private life also settles down after spending a holiday with Dodi Fayed and hersons.
