Juniors joined forces to give budding local footballers some expert tuition.
B
During the recent school holidays, the
Rovers coaching staff taught local children all the basic football skills such as passing, drib bling, heading and tackling at the Ridings Playing Fields in Lang ho.
There was a good turnout, and many
will hope to put those skills into practice for Langho Juniors this season.

THE Blues made it through to the next
round. Gabriels, from a division lower than Clitheroe, proved
tough opposition but the Blues deserved the win after creating more clear-cut chances. Paul Mullin was unlucky when he beat a defender and
the keeper saved well. Castleton hit back and Clitheroe keeper Dawson had
to be quick to stop Castleton from winning a comer. Clitheroe skipper Chris Crimshaw was causing prob
lems but his fron t men were often caught out b y a tough-tackling Gabriels’ defence. I t was Castleton who came closest to scoring when
they struck a post with Dawson beaten. But neither side found their attacking play producing
many results and the first half was scrappy for long
periods. . Clitheroe managed to book their passage into the next
round after 48 minutes when danger-man Grimshaw ran d ow n th e r ig h t and crossed th e b a l l to the unmarked Ma rk Walsh.
He headed past the keeper from close range. Paul Lynch was unlucky to see his header flash past
the post, but Gabriels then began to pressure the
Blues’ defence. Clitheroe were fortunate when Dawson failed to hold a
cross but no Gabriels player was on hand to put the
ball into the net. W ith time running out Clitheroe put the shutters up
and Castleton could not find a way through. Clitheroe 4, Rossendale United 1
United at Shawbridge on Monday.,.. The visitors were without five of their regular players,
C
but still managed to give Clitheroe a good fight. As early as the eighth minute Paul Lynch hit a post
but Rossendale hit back.
I John Ogden, a new signing from Leigh R M I brought 1 in to cover for the absent John Mo rre y who is away with work, pulled of f a fine save. A f te r 20 minutes D a ve Bennett, also making his debut, scored with a vicious left-foot shot into the far
comer o f the net. On 39 minutes Rossendale equalised when a scorching
shot from John Eastham flew in towards goal and was only partially cleared. Eastham was on hand to slip
the ball home. Th e score at half-time was 1-1, but man-of-the-match
Bennett was determined it would not stay that way
too long into the second half. H e put Clitheroe back in front on 55 minutes when he
gave Paul Horridge no chance with a neat shot. Th is seemed to end the Dalesmen’s appetite for the
game, and they came under pressure constantly with A n d y Ta y lor playing some good forward balls to his
men. On 70 minutes Walsh hit the net following a good
move from Dave Sharpies. Th e Blues completed the scoring on 89 minutes when
Grimshaw’s comer found the head of X a v Bowers and he powered i t past the keeper to give the Blues anoth er three points.

an interesting game. “ I don’t think we have got things quite right yet,” he said.
“ But at times we are playing some great football, and
things are going in the right direction. “ The most important thing on Saturday was to get a win
after losing two games. “ There’s nothing worse after a couple of bad results than
to play well and lose. “We didn’t play that badly, in fact we played quite well in

Gamer had one golden chance to equalise but his shot was straight a t the keeper. The second half began in spectacular fasion for Clitheroe.
A comer after 47 minutes came out to Anderton and the central defender fired home from 20 yards. A minute later a jinking run by skipper. Holding took him into the area and his pass to second half substitute Dave
Horrocks was put beyond the keeper. The next 20 minutes found the reserves well on top, but
they could not add to the score. A s the half came to end Chadderton were once again proving dangerous and only a great save by Ormerod kept

C O N V IN C IN G 8-1 win over West End saw Readstone United Under 10s
start the season in superb style. Steve James hit half the goals, with John
Thompson adding two, and Benjamin Heap and Michael Whittaker one each. However, the Under 11s lost out 5-0 to the
same club, despite a fine performance from Kevin Golding. The Under 12s lost out 9-0 against Bar-
rowford Celtic, but the Under 14s had nine goals in the plus column, beating White Horse Colts 9-1. Martyn Thompson and Scott Robinson
both netted hat-tricks, while Hudson Par sons (2 ) and Rupert Craddock were also on target. Last season’s Under 15 B Division cham
pions Whalley hammered Darwen Cricket Club 9-1 in their first match. Adam Stevenson fired them in front, and
R yan P e el added two more before the break. G a ry H a slam, James Jackson, P h i l
McG auley, Richa rd W h a l le y and two more from man-of-the-match Stevenson, to complete his hat-trick, completed the scoring. Whalley and McGauley stood out in an
excellent team performance. Despite gifting St Joseph’s the opener in
the first minute, Whalley Under 12s recov
ered to win 2-1. The locals equalised after the break when
Jamie Enefer’s free kick was headed over the keeper by his own defender for an own goal, and Enefer’s late strike sealed the
points. Terry Fothergill was outstanding. The newly-formed Under 16s played their
first competitive match, and although los ing 7-1 after pulling level at 1-1 through Dave Walker’s long-range chip — the goal of the game— Whalley competed well and Patrick Noone was star man. Whalley Under 14s had to field a 10-man
team against Blackburn Boys, and they lost out 12-0. The lads gave everything despite being
under the cosh for most of the game, and David Bailey stood out. The Under 13s lost out 1-0 to St Joseph’s
in dramatic fashion.. In the last minute, a David Mercer free
kick thundered against the angle of post and bar and the visitors broke down the field to score the winner. Goalkeeper James Nelson was man-of-
the-match. Clitheroe Wolves Under 12s got their sea
son off to a fine start with magnificent 8-0 win over Brierfield Celtic in the Burnley and District Youth League. The team got of f to a great start playing
some fine football and took a 6-0 lead by the break. I t took time to get to grips with a strong
wind in the second half, but when they did they played well and knocked in another
couple of goals. _ Scorers were M a rk H itchin w ith four,
man-of-the-match Michael Galeski with a hat-trick and Karl Fowler with the other.

they dominated the first 20 minutes. Scrivens had two good headers well saved,
while Aspinwall was unlucky to see two great shots go wide. Then Blenkinship played Shears in with a lovely pass, only for the keeper to make a
great save. The home side had just two shots at goal
in the first period as Craven played good attacking football, but the sides went in level at the break. Springhill came more into the game after the restart, but again the locals wasted
good chances. Springhill then broke away and their for ward was fouled in the box, resulting in a
penalty. Th e spot kick was netted, and with 10
minutes left, Craven had it all to do. The locals applied some real pressure, but
they found the opposing keeper in great form, stopping efforts from Aspinwall and Shears. Scrivens moved up fron t and put two
good headers over, but i t was not to be for the locals.

their all, particularly young debutant Haworth, who was third top-scorer for Read with 21, and then took two catches on the boundary, the second of which ended the
