HELP FIGHT HUNGER APPEAL FOR DONATIONS
Right now 14.5 million people in the UK are living in poverty. More than 4.3 million of these are children. These numbers continue to climb as the cost of living escalates. People are having to make difficult choices - whether to fill up the car, pay the rent or do the weekly shop.
Local charity FareShare Midlands redistributes good quality, in-date surplus food which would otherwise have gone to waste. They turn an environmental problem into a social solution.
The food arrives into the warehouses, where it is sorted and stored by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. The supplies are redistributed to more than 550 charities and community groups across the Midlands, including community centres, homeless shelters and children’s breakfast and after school clubs.
These local organisations (called Community Food Members) turn the food into food parcels and delicious meals for vulnerable people. Last year FareShare Midlands delivered enough food to create 16 million meals. As well as food, the Community Food Members provide vital support to vulnerable people facing challenging circumstances.
To continue this vital work FareShare Midlands needs donations. A regular donation of £10 a month could provide 40 meals for homeless people. By donating £20 a month, 80 lunches could be delivered at a community café. £50 funds 200 meals at a day centre for elderly people, which also helps fight isolation and loneliness.
FareShare Midlands also needs willing and able people to volunteer in the warehouses. Volunteers perform essential tasks, such as driving the vans making collections and deliveries and sorting and packing the food. FareShare Midlands food reaches over 60,000 people every week – they simply could not do this without their amazing volunteers.
FareShare Midlands director Simone Connolly said: “The challenges which arose during the COVID19 pandemic were enormous. Having survived those, our community members now find themselves battling to support local people struggling as the cost of living crisis escalates.
“Anyone donating to FareShare Midlands will provide vulnerable families with food that is desperately needed at the moment. If someone is able to volunteer and lend a hand that would also make a massive difference.”
