s 2023 comes to a close, the first signs of a new dawn are breaking out along the horizon. In 2024, global passenger numbers are finally expected to surpass 2019 figures, as the air travel industry finally shakes off the last traces of the Covid-19 pandemic. London’s Heathrow Airport, in a December report, revealed that it expects to see 81.4 million pass through terminals in 2024, compared with 80.9 million in 2019. This year, the number of passengers came to 79.1 million. Of course, that’s not to say that everything is rosy across the sector. Even with all the reasons for optimism, the industry still faces a number of challenges – but luckily, it has all the skills, talent and perseverance it needs to overcome them. With the war in Ukraine raging on, on page 20 we find out how airlines around the world have adapted their routes and strategies around the closure of Russian and Ukrainian airspace. Similarly, given the season, we also take a look at some of the difficulties faced by airports in certain parts of the world that deal with extreme weather conditions and freezing temperatures, and learn how they prepare and overcome these challenges, on page 32.

At the same time, technological developments are leading to new opportunities within the sector, as we hear from Schiphol and Eindhoven airports on page 26, regarding their implementation of an AI solution to enhance their turnaround process. Likewise, on page 11, we investigate how wait times have been affected in airports that have introduced CT scanners to their security lanes. For all the difficulties that we’ve faced since the pandemic, it’s great to know that this industry will never stop innovating and driving itself forward. With passenger numbers set to finally surpass 2019 figures next year, here’s hoping that this spirit of innovation will continue to boost the sector in the years ahead.
