The better scan
In airports across the world, security lanes are increasingly likely to be outfi tted with modern CT scanners rather than the X-ray machines that had been ubiquitous for decades. From effi ciency to security, these new devices offer plenty of advantages, even if implementation isn’t always straightforward. Andrea Valentino talks to experts from across Europe to understand what effect the introduction of these CT scanners has had on both security wait times and the passenger experience – and consider some of the other innovations that could make the whole experience more enjoyable.
hoes off. Laptops out. Belts in the box. All these commands – barks, really – will be instantly and depressingly recognisable to any frequent flyer. Especially since 9/11, and the demolition of the laid- back security regimes that existed before, they’ve become the common refrain from London to Los Angeles, so habitual that many passengers grab their laptops and pat their pockets down for change before they’re even asked. Certainly, the ubiquity of airport security is reflected in the numbers.

experience. This is hardly surprising. Between the tiresome queues, the hectoring guards, the humiliation of waddling barefoot through a scanner, it’s small wonder polls as far back as 2012 found that 91% of US passengers thought their country’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was doing a fair or bad job with airport security. Yet, if such dissatisfaction is vividly reflected in the real world – a 2018 study by ORC International found that one of seven travellers missed a flight due to long security queues – the root causes of these frustrations are less often explored.
