Environment Cutting carbon
Airports around the world are looking for ways to reduce carbon emissions, from offering reduced fees to airlines that use lower-emission aircraft to attempting to ban night fl ights and private jet use. Martin Morris talks to Andrea Carroll, head of sustainability at daa, Denise Pronk, head of sustainability, Royal Schiphol Group; and Kevin O’Leary, COO, Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, to learn more about how airports are tackling their emissions.
t the recently held third International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) in Dubai, members agreed to commit to a target of reducing CO2
A emissions by 5% by 2030 – which forms
part of the industry’s wider objective of hitting net zero by 2050. Though the number seems modest, meaningful steps are already being taken by airports around the world to reduce their local emissions – not least by Ireland’s daa Group, which operates Dublin and Cork airports, the Netherlands-based Royal Schiphol Group, which runs Amsterdam Airport Schiphol among others, and Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), the operator of 11 airports in the Scottish Highlands, the Northern Isles and the Western Isles.
Forty shades of green
In May 2023, daa announced proposals for new sustainability measures to incentivise airlines to operate lower-CO2
-emission aircraft at Dublin Airport.
Under the new scheme, a low-emissions discount of 25% off runway charges would apply, but for airlines frequently flying high-emission aircraft, they would pay higher charges in line with their CO2
emissions.
After introducing the first phase of its environmental charging strategy in 2022, daa already applies higher charges for noisier aircraft operating at night. Consequently, airlines operating at Dublin Airport are forecast – under the various measures – to achieve discounts in excess of €30m this year. In particular, airlines with aircraft based at Dublin Airport, such as Ryanair and Aer Lingus, are expected to reap the
