e seem doomed to live in interesting times. No sooner does one era- defining story begin to recede than another take its place – our days always dominated by an all-encompassing narrative that reaches out into every industry and daily life. In the West, at least, the beginning of 2022 felt like the light at the end of the tunnel. The Omicron variant had proved less deadly than feared and normal life – or a close facsimile of it – had returned for many. That light was dimmed with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. Far from a surprise, it had been telegraphed for some time, and even the brightest optimists had resigned themselves to the knowledge that some level of armed conflict was on the cards. The European continent has been no stranger to armed conflict in the past few decades, of course, from the Balkan Wars to the Russia-Georgia conflict – though the pedants among us may point out that Georgia’s position in Europe or Asia is highly contested. However, the war in Ukraine – for whatever reasons – has hit home in the West in a way that previous conflicts have not. And while support for the Ukrainian defenders has flourished in the West, their successes against the Russian offensive have been a surprise to many. On a deeper examination, Russia’s military underperformance has been the result of a collection of failures in preparation. On page 48, we look at how logistical issues have plagued the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine and thwarted its ambitions to take Kyiv. On page 38, we look a little further afield at how Russian anti-satellite missile testing has reinforced space’s status as a burgeoning theatre of war. And on page 10, we sit down with Ludwig Decamps, general manager of the Nato Communications and Information Agency, to discuss its new strategic plan for 2022–26 and participation in the annual Locked Shields exercise as he approaches the end of his first year in the role. No matter how the conflict in Ukraine plays out, it has already raised questions over how war is conducted in the 21st century. How defence forces react and respond may well dictate the next hundred years.
