Delivering on demolition P

rocurement for the armed forces can be cumbersome and complicated. Often core solutions are provided by the largest global equipment suppliers who have the reach and the product range to meet many needs in one place. In some specific niches, however, the agility of a small enterprise can be an advantage, as it enables a supplier to adapt to its clients’ needs and not only deliver products, but also handle the full complexity of the supply chain from order to delivery.

“Our company is a small business and we have a lot of flexibility, as well as the ability to iterate products quickly,” says Kevin Catallo, commercial director at CBRNergetics Limited. “We also have a flat structure, so everyone touches every part of the business and that means decisions can be made quickly.” “Also, we operate in an entrepreneurial way and we can deliver across the entire supply chain,” he adds. “That is what differentiates us in our small niche. Some competitors are good at shipping, sales or support, but we do the whole lot. That is because we have a lot of expertise – including people like myself who have been in the military or in a commercial role in the defence industry.”

of requirements then we can meet their needs,” he adds. “Government agencies procure in such a way that the people making the orders are not the ones who will ultimately use the equipment. So, we consult on the list and provide technical input, which can lead to some iteration of products including bespoke aspects. These custom elements often affect the packaging and the marking, which need to fit the precise requirements of the military in different countries.”

A portfolio that packs a punch The demolition stores and initiation products that CBRNergetics brings to market are, in some ways, unchanged in decades in terms of their basic function. Yet there is always scope to improve on a product or make it suitable to the needs of a specific military force. That is why the company is consistently involved in R&D projects with many of its clients. “The Rapid Crater Kit Mk.2 (RCK), which is the choice for many key clients including one Nato end user, is the focus of recent development,” says Catallo. “It is a piece of equipment that has been around since the Second World War, and we worked with a key partner to develop a modern way of initiating this venerable piece of kit.

“Then the bespoke packaging was built around that,” he adds. “Every piece fits in the box in a way that is safe for transport and long-term storage, but when the box is opened the product is very intuitive in terms of how it should be used. It has a pilot charge that blows a deep hole in the ground, then large crater charges to blow a bigger hole. The main update was the initiation system and the bespoke packaging.”

That process of iteration stems to every product in the company’s range, including

Though many suppliers to the military are turning their focus to increasingly high-tech solutions, the need for more basic munitions remains. There are always things that need to be blown up on the battlefield. Kevin Catallo, commercial director at CBRNergetics Limited, explains the importance of providing an agile supply chain solution for demolition stores.
