Company insight

sustainability. The long-established family business, founded in 1900 and now run by the third generation of the Kröner family, invested €36m last year in state-of-the-art technologies to strategically expand its product portfolio. With the addition of a drum drying facility dedicated to gluten-free applications and a new extrusion line to produce textured vegetable protein (TVP) and pregelatinised flours, Kröner-Stärke is ideally positioned to meet the rising demand for plant-based and allergen-free food solutions. Through this trend-setting investment, Kröner makes a significant contribution to enabling a resource-conserving nutritional transformation on a broad scale.

Plant-based proteins on the rise In response to the growing consumer shift towards alternative protein sources, Kröner-Stärke now offers a new line of textured plant-based proteins, ideal for a wide range of convenience foods such as vegan burgers, sausages and sauces. The extruded powders are also perfectly suited for protein enrichment in baked goods and low-carb products. Marketed under the VTex brand, these products are 100% plant-based, clean label and produced entirely without additives. On request, the full range is also available in certified organic quality and with precise indication of the origin of the raw materials. Various granulations, shapes and protein blends can be tailored to meet specific customer requirements – offering maximum flexibility for food manufacturers with innovative product concepts.

Added value through versatility Beyond TVP, the new extrusion line is also used to produce pregelatinised flours from a variety of grains, including wheat, rye, rice, buckwheat and corn. The processing of selected raw material

qualities and wholegrain flours addresses nutrition-conscious costumers by contributing to a wholesome diet. These functional ingredients are ideal for applications in sports nutrition, bakery products and snacks, adding texture, stability and nutritional value.

Drum drying innovation

Another key highlight of the investment is the installation of new drum drying capacity at the Ibbenbüren site, exclusively dedicated to processing gluten-free raw materials. This enhances Kröner-Stärke’s long-standing expertise in gluten-free innovation. Back in the 1990s, the company launched SANOSTAR, a gluten-free wheat starch developed specifically for coeliac-friendly diets. Produced in a purely natural process, without enzymes or processing aids, SANOSTAR meets the stringent gluten threshold of maximum 20ppm gliadin. Due to outstanding functional properties – for example, in baking processes – this natural ingredient provides people with coeliac disease the opportunity to consume high-quality, varied and tasty food products. With the new drum dryer, raw materials such as corn, waxy corn and tapioca are converted into gluten-free starches with

precisely defined viscosities. These natural alternatives are used to replace chemically modified starches and to optimise gluten-free recipes across the food and snack industries.

A strategic move for long-term growth

This new facility is a pioneering example for responsible food production, focusing the sustainable use of resources throughout the entire process. The latest investment underscores Kröner-Stärke’s commitment to delivering clean label and gluten-free solutions for the forward- thinking food industry. By designing the structural and logistical opportunities on site with long-term orientation, Kröner- Stärke ensures that growing demand for affordable, wholesome and modern food in the coming years can be met by further expanding production capacity. By introducing the VTex range and expanding production capabilities for functional flours and starches, the company is not only extending its value chain at a single location, but also reinforcing its role as a forward-thinking partner in the fast-growing market for plant-based and allergen-free nutrition. 
