Company insight

Too much screen time can lead to a strain on our eyes, especially in children who use digital devices a lot.

eye strain. Over 84 days, participants were assessed across multiple visits, undergoing clinical and visual tests before and after one hour of controlled digital activity (a self-selected video game). The results showed that daily astaxanthin supplementation significantly reduced both subjective and objective measures of eye strain: ■ Chronic digital eye strain decreased by 20% (p<0.05).

■ Acute digital eye strain decreased by 27% (p=0.01).

■ Improvements were observed in stereopsis (depth perception), pupillary light reflex and tear production.

Overall, findings suggest that astaxanthin enhances visual endurance, reduces oxidative stress and improves ocular hydration, making it a promising solution for children experiencing screen-related eye strain. Importantly, no adverse effects were reported, highlighting its safety for long-term use at the recommended daily dose.

Child-friendly formulations and regulatory approval

Astaxanthin-rich oleoresin is an approved novel food in Europe and can be

incorporated into child-friendly formats such as gummies, chewabless and confectionery. The maximum authorised daily doses for children in Europe are: ■ 3 to <10 years: 2.3mg/day ■ 10 to <14 years: 5.7mg/day ■ 14+ years: 8mg/day

This allows for the development of palatable, easy-to-consume products that can support children’s visual health in a convenient way.

Industry implications: addressing the digital screen challenge The widespread use of digital screens among children has raised concerns about visual health, cognitive development, sleep quality and mental well-being. While some authorities advocate for limiting screen time, others emphasise the responsible development of digital technologies. Meanwhile, there is a major opportunity for the nutraceutical industry to provide scientifically validated solutions. AstaReal astaxanthin supplementation offers a safe, natural and evidence-based approach to reducing digital eye strain and supporting paediatric and adult’s vision health. By incorporating astaxanthin into functional

foods and dietary supplements (subject to local market regulations), the industry can meet the growing demand for preventive eye health solutions tailored to modern digital lifestyles. AstaReal, with over 75 human clinical studies, is dedicated to contributing to a sustainable and healthy future for all.
