hat a joy it is to write this foreword on the move. I’m travelling by train up to Edinburgh after being stuck in England for 18 months, a journey that was until a few months ago impossible. Going back to the city of my student days feels momentous. People are wearing masks, and there’s still some confusion around the notion of aisle seats and who gets to sit in them – I have no idea – but the train is on time. Everything feels very normal, or as close to how it was before that mysterious virus started plaguing Wuhan residents and we all had to become part-time epidemiologists. With the vaccine roll-out mostly ongoing through Europe and lockdowns lessening, some normality is returning to hospitality at last, even if there is a widespread understanding that things can never return to how they were pre-pandemic. In many ways, that’s a good thing. After all, what would be the point in making the same old mistakes rather than striving to do better? You will find that progressive sentiment echoed throughout this issue, starting on page 12, where Duncan O’Rourke, CEO of North |Europe for Accor, tells us how the company is not resting on its laurels. Instead, Europe’s largest hospitality group has grand plans for its European expansion.

Meanwhile, on page 51, Abi Millar speaks to WOHA co-founder Richard Hassell and Bill Browning, founding partner of Terrapin Bright Green, about the growing science of biophilia and the role it can play in enhancing the health and well-being of hotel staff and guests. In some ways, it is a remarkably simple concept, but a necessary one as negating the impact of a looming climate disaster will invariably become the overriding focus post-pandemic. I hope you enjoy the latest edition of Hotel Management International as much as it was a joy putting together. And no, I’m not staying in a hotel tonight. They’re all booked up.
