AT THE END of 2024, we have a lively read for you with Tim Pyne, the exhibition designer par excellence who game-changed trade exhibitions forever. Remember what an impact the very first 100% Design had when it was launched about 30
years ago? He is just as lively with his newish exhibition, called Footprint Plus, happening in May 2025. Ten we have a celebration of product design with both the features on Science Fiction Design at Vitra, and Kusch+Co celebrating 85 years, including with products by Luigi Colani (our previous FX Outstanding Lifetime Achievement winner). It is testimony to the post-war evolution of contemporary design and new manufacturing materials and methods that we can celebrate great product design. Looking ahead, we also have our radical thinker Gavin
Hughes, design director, at HLW, who is both humble, hilarious and serious in his responses to radical thinking. He mentions Dieter Rams as an inspiration (another Kusch product designer), but offers wide-ranging and exceptional references in his radical thinking. Moving to art but staying with exhibitions, we
also have a preview of Michael Craig-Martin, who kickstarted the Young British Artists (YBAs), for better or worse, 30 years ago, and now has an exhibition celebrating his own conceptual art at the Royal Academy of Art. On a practical level we have a brilliant article by
Veronica Simpson about new models of retirement and how you are raising the game in championing the considerable problems of growing old. As Bette Davis once said, ‘growing old is not for sissies’; if design is all about problem-solving, then this issue takes the biscuit. See you at the FX Awards!
