Gordon Timber appoints Johnny Dean as new CEO


Rod Gordon, who have served as joint managing directors for 25 years, become executive directors.


Rod Gordon is now stepping back from his operational role to concentrate on strategic priorities whilst Scott Gordon continues with his responsibility for capital expenditure and sales.

Gordon Timber, one of the UK’s leading sawmilling businesses, based in Nairn, Highlands, has announced the appointment of Johnny Dean as its new chief executive officer (CEO). This marks a significant transition for the family-owned company of over 160 years standing, as Scott and


Johnny Dean brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having been with Gordon Timber for 17 years. Throughout his tenure, he has played a pivotal role as a senior manager and has overseen the company’s harvesting operations, ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and innovation in the business.


“Johnny’s deep understanding of our operations, industry expertise, and commitment to our values make him the ideal person to take Gordon Timber forward,” said Scott and Rod Gordon. “His leadership will ensure we continue to build on our strong foundations whilst embracing future opportunities for growth and development.”


Andrew Carpenter stepping down as STA chief executive officer


“The industry is entering a pivotal moment, with a renewed focus on timber in construction and the recent government endorsement of the TiC (Timber in Construction Roadmap) providing an unprecedented opportunity for growth,” said Mr Carpenter. “To ensure that TiC is successfully delivered and reaches its full potential, I hope to dedicate myself entirely to this mission,” continued Mr Carpenter. “This initiative will require additional attention, and I believe stepping away from my role as CEO is the right decision to prioritise what is best for the industry’s future. I now need to work with my timber industry partners to understand how best I can add value in delivering the roadmap and driving it into the UK construction sector.

Andrew Carpenter, chief executive officer of the Structural Timber Association for the last 14 years, is stepping down from the role and intends to take on a new challenge within the timber industry.


“This is a significant and ambitious endeavour – one that will shape the growth of our industry for years to come. If things go as I plan, I look forward to working closely with all STA members and the wider timber industry in this next chapter to make it a resounding success.”

Mon Timber, a branch of Premier Forest Products, has appointed Martin Hallam as general manager of engineering. Mr Hallam joined the team at Mon Timber as business development manager last year, excelling in building and strengthening customer relationships and continued positive promotion of products to suppliers.


As Mon Timber looks to develop its engineering services, following customer demand, Mr Hallam was promoted to lead the division from its site in Newport. Mr Hallam has also played a part in the development of the newly launched timber engineering facility at Duchy Timber, based in Cornwall, as it looks to expand its territorial reach across south Wales and the west. Both engineering sites focus on the design and off-site manufacture of roof truss and floor joist solutions.


Frank Elkins elected to BMF board Frank Elkins, CEO of Selco and GB


Distribution at Grafton Group plc, has been elected to the board of the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) for a second term, starting on April 1, 2025. Mr Elkins’ career has been in merchanting for over 30 years. He served as a BMF board member for two years, from April 2021 to April 2023, while he was group COO at Travis Perkins plc In his current role, he is responsible for the leadership and strategic development of Grafton Group’s distribution businesses in GB.


Mr Elkins will take specific responsibility


for “People and Skills”, one of four strategic themes in the BMF’s strategy roadmap, each with its own board owner.
