TIMBER AND JOINERY VALUE SALES DOWN
Latest BMBI stats show February’s timber and joinery value sales down year-on-year SUMMARY
■February value sales of timber and joinery products were down -4.8% year-on-year
■Timber and joinery products underperformed total builders’ merchants’ sales
■Value sales in February were +4.4% higher than January
merchants – these were landscaping (+15.1%), services (+6.1%) and heavy building materials (+5.4%). Timber and joinery products (+1.9%) grew more slowly. Work wear and safety wear was the weakest category, down -8.3%. With two fewer trading days in February, like-for- like value sales were up +14.8%. ■

The latest Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) report, published in April, shows builders’ merchants’ value sales in February were down -2.7% compared to the same month in 2024. Volume sales remain flat (-0.1%) while prices dropped -2.6%. With one fewer trading day in the most recent period, like-for-like value sales were up +2.2%. Year-on-year, just three categories sold more – services (+3%), tools (+2.6%) and miscellaneous (+2.3%). Plumbing, heating and electrical (-1.3%) and heavy building materials (-1.6%) while still down, performed better than total merchants. Timber and joinery products under performed total builders’ merchants, falling by -4.8%. Decorating (-6.4%) and renewables and water saving (-6.6%) were the weakest categories. In the three months from December 2024 to February 2025, total value sales were -1.1% behind the same three-month period a year before. Volume sales were increased +1.8% but prices fell -2.8%. Four of the 12 categories sold more, with services (+4.9%) and tools (+4.1%) performing best. Timber and joinery products were down -3.4%, while renewables and water saving (-7%) saw the biggest drop. There was no difference in trading days. Value sales in February were +4.4% higher than January. Month-on-month volume sales rose +8% and prices were down -3.4%.
