Sector Focus: Cladding & Shingles | 39
“Globally, the main demand for Accoya Color has been as a decking product and our focus has been in markets outside the UK,” said Ms Keily. “But we have recently introduced a second shift at our Accoya Color plant in Barry, UK, doubling capacity in order to keep up with demand, and this should allow us to start developing more of a cladding market, including in the UK.” In the summer of 2024, Accsys opened the first US Accoya manufacturing facility. The new plant represents an investment of approximately $136m and significantly increases capacity for the North American market, while also freeing up production at the company’s European site to serve local markets, including for cladding. “Combined with the increase in capacity at Barry, this has given customers confidence in supply and availability, and this is driving growth in cladding,” said Ms Keily. Accsys has also invested in supporting manufacturers entering the Accoya cladding market through a dedicated manufacturing training programme. This includes guidance based on experience with a wide range of coating systems and is delivered by Accsys’ technical team across the country, helping manufacturers achieve the desired finish and performance from the outset.
In terms of cladding product innovation,
Accsys also highlights developments with battening and track systems to facilitate
installation. In particular, aluminium systems are allowing quick click and install on site and, says Accsys, such developments are further contributing to making wooden cladding more appealing to builders and supporting more widespread adoption. In terms of channels to market, Accsys sees the merchanting sector growing in significance. “It’s been really encouraging to see more and more merchants offering off-the-shelf Accoya profiles,” said Ms Keily. “This widens availability of Accoya for cladding and broadens our market reach. We’re keen to deepen our relationships in this area further, particularly with cladding specialists.” Accoya has also continued to be specified for some high-profile projects, says Accsys, as impactful shop windows for the product. “We’re eagerly anticipating the opening of Google’s new HQ in London’s King’s Cross this year - a flagship development featuring an Accoya slatted façade and scheduled for completion in late 2026,” said Ms Keily. “Further afield, we’ve also been involved in an extraordinary project at the SILT Hotel in Belgium, where Accoya beams form a striking, skeletal façade for the beachfront property.” In the US, where sales volumes are up 61% year on year, besides residential applications, Accoya has gained a growing market in the hotel sector. “We were especially proud to see it selected for the boutique MOLLIE hotel in the Aspen,
Colorado ski resort,” said Ms Keily. “If that’s not the ultimate testament to Accoya’s performance, we’re not sure what is!” Accsys has also been upping marketing activities, with its headline recent project being last year’s Accoya rebrand. “This elevates our brand look with a more sophisticated colour palette to reflect the premium quality of Accoya,” said Ms Keily. “We’ve also continued to invest in our digital marketing, launching a new portal for distributors to make marketing materials more readily accessible to them and are continuing to bolster our social media presence.” She added that Accsys also provides
marketing support to producers using Accoya through its Approved Manufacturers Programme.
Looking forward, Accsys predicts further growth in sales of Accoya cladding into the UK and Irish markets, with an array of projects using it already ‘in the works’ in both domestic and commercial sectors. These, said Ms Keily, range from renovation installations and modular builds to garden centres and drive-thrus.
“Our roots have been in windows and doors in the UK and Ireland, so we’ve still just scratched the surface of the possibilities for Accoya cladding,” she said. “And with façades being so visible, each high-profile installation has the potential to create a powerful snowball effect.”
