Klaus Hönisch Klaus Hönisch graduated in Civil Engineering at the Technische Universität Berlin in 1974. Furthermore, he assisted there in research work on anisotropic disks and plates at the Second Institute for Technical Mechanics and later, for two years, in geotechnics research on stresses at the tunnel face alongside Professor Wittke, at the Institute for Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering, Rock Mechanics & Waterways, RWTH Aachen. Klaus Hönisch Bayardo Materón
International Consulting Engineers in Frankfurt, Germany – specialists in hydro power and cavern engineering since 1967 – where he contributed to the design and/or construction supervision of ten power house caverns and shafts. Following part-time research work in hydro cavern design between 1990 and 1992, under the supervision of Professor Floss at the Institute for Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering & Rock Mechanics, Technische Universität München, he took his doctor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1993. After three years with a German subsidiary of EWI, concentrating on the rehabilitation works of rock foundations he joined the International Division of Bilfinger Berger – Geotechnics Group in 1996. After leaving Bilfinger Berger in 2003, Klaus Hönisch is now employed by Fichtner GmbH Consulting Engineers in Stuttgart within their Infrastructure & Water Technology Department, Hydropower Division, where his main interest remains the design and back- analysis of rock mass parameters from monitoring results at hydro power and multi-purpose dams, caverns, shafts and tunnels. ●
Concrete Face Rockfill Dams
Bayardo Materón Bayardo Materón is a consulting engineer working in the field of rockfill dams and hydropower construction methods. He was educated at the Cauca University, Popayán, Colombia (1960) and Purdue University, Indiana, US (1965), where he received his degrees in civil engineering and MSc in civil engineering, respectively.
Vahid Afsari-Rad
Since the completion of the Alto Anchicayá CFR dam in 1974, in Colombia, he has been involved with many leading engineering organisations in both the design and construction of rockfill dams and hydro projects. He is also President of the International Society of CFRD’s, and has participated in the design and construction of some of the world’s highest CFR dams.

He is a member of the Board of Consultants for various projects under design and construction, and is coordinator of the CFRDs and ACRDs Commission for the CBDB (Brazilian Committee of Dams). He has contributed towards construction of other dams as follows:

Asphalt Core Embankment Dams
Vahid Afsari-Rad Vahid Afsari-Rad is a civil engineer from the Norwegian Technical University (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. He began his career with Veidekke in 1995, working with design management. In 2004 he joined Veidekke Industri AS, a subsidiary of Veidekke ASA, one of Scandinavia’s leading general contractors. Out of 150 asphaltic core embankment dams that have been built worldwide since 1962, Veidekke Industri AS has built 30. Afsari-Rad has served extensively as project advisor on dam projects around the globe. He has also participated in several research projects related to asphalt core design and construction, as well as taking on the role of keynote speaker at the International Dam World Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2015. He is also a NNCOLD board member. Afsari-Rad is Director of his own advisory and consulting company AsphaltCoreDams AS. ●
