Floodgates Floodgates can be designed to operate on a flat threshold, allowing unrestricted vehicle, pedestrian and disabled access. Lightweight aluminium floodgates are available in widths up to 4.5m and flood defence heights up to 1.8m, whilst steel floodgates can be designed to any size. All floodgates can be automatic and push-button operated if required. Specific options include hinged floodgates, pivot floodgates and rolling floodgates in a full range of sizes.

Dam: East London, UK Dams are inspected on a regular basis: at its last inspection, the main weakness of this particular reservoir was identified as the spillway capacity, which is limited by the discharge pipework to approximately 2m3/sec, whilst the probable maximum “safety check” flood is estimated at 45m3/sec. A study indicated that it was not feasible to prevent overtopping of the dam. Instead, it recommended that proposed works should include measures to protect the dam against overtopping flows. The client considered the options on the basis of hydraulics, associated civil design, environmental impact and cost. The modification of the left bank to function as a second auxiliary spillway was identified as the preferred design option. This included installing a new floodgate on the crest road adjacent to the spillway, to prevent flow spilling south from the additional spillway during operation, as well as installing a second floodgate at the southern end of the dam adjacent to the existing (secondary) spillway, to prevent flow spilling north from the spillway during operation.


Gas Terminal: Texas, US In Texas, one of the largest existing liquefied natural gas terminals in the world is in a coastal hurricane floodplain, where the 100-year flood elevation is based on a storm surge under hurricane conditions, with potential flooding effects from the Gulf of Mexico. A perimeter storm surge protection barrier was required, to encircle the developed portion of the facility. The barrier was constructed from imported materials and fill, with a finished top-of-barrier elevation of 4.8m. A tailor-made 9.1m long, 3.9m high winched sliding floodgate was designed for this important coastal


Types of flood protection


Demountable Flood Barriers – ideal where only very infrequent access is required for maintenance.


Pivot Floodgates – where level access is required and frequent access for flood heights up to 600mm flood height.


Swing Hinged Floodgates – for personnel access through floodwalls or for bunded areas outside fire escapes.


Lift-Hinged Floodgates – for level access for openings up to 4.5m wide and flood heights up to 1.5m.


Permanent steel panels and concrete walls – to surround at risk assets for permanent protection.


Coating of masonry walls – for existing assets where ‘porous’ brickwork would otherwise allow floodwater in.


Non-Return Valves – for existing drains or new flap valves to allow rainwater out of impounded areas. Security Rated Flood Doors – for permanent protection to secure assets.


site, to protect against possible hurricane storm surge flooding. For ease of transportation, the floodgate was designed from the start, to be manufactured and shipped from the UK to the US in two halves. Due to its location, there were also remarkably high load criteria and specification requirements to be met for materials and coatings.


Treatment Works: Various Sites, UK Sometimes, perimeter flood defences are not feasible and so a series of measures are required to protect individual assets. Working with one of the UK’s largest utilities providers, a total of 30 critical sites were surveyed, leading to a range of solutions, for a wide variety of usage frequencies and flood depths. Many of the flood barriers were specially designed, with Flood Control’s 3D CAD teams able to produce bespoke flood barrier drawings to suit the many different assets encountered.


Nuclear Power Stations: Various Sites, UK Other examples of Flood Control’s work include water treatment works and nuclear power stations in the UK. The measures put in place when a full flood abatement programme is required can be concrete walls and floodgates, protection at building line and security flood doors, installation of barriers surrounding plant items or hatches below flood level, as well as linking some barriers to a building management system, to signal when barriers are in place. ●
