BELOW THE HOOK Ӏ SECTOR SNAPSHOT

The RAM Octo universal pipe handling spreader enables operators to handle a range of pipe lengths and diameters at a safe distance, and can handle one, two or three pipes at a time, of diameters from 16 to 60 inches (40cm to 152cm).

It is specifically designed for

the break bulk market, and a typical application is loading and unloading vessels, where pipes need to be stacked compactly and hold space may be confined.

PLUG-IN LIFTING POINT For more general lifting tasks loads need lifting points. If there are no natural lifting points and your load is, say, a metal fabricated component a good approach is to drill a hole through a suitable flange and fit some. Readymade lifting points are widely available. They typically have a threaded shank and are fixed in place by inserting the shank through your new hole and screwing on a nut to secure it. Chain and shackle specialist RUD has come up with a quicker and simpler alternative. It is claiming it as a revolution in lifting points no less. RUD is calling it the PIP-Rapido. Its shank is smooth, not

threaded. It is a plug-in lifting point. No nut is required; so no tools are needed and less fixing time is taken.

RUD claims it gives up to 80%

faster setup and removal times compared to boltable lifting points and say it is ideal for through-holes and undercut applications, or applications where access to the rear of the load is restricted. To fix the PIP-Rapido you plug it into the hole so that the shank protrudes the other side; then you twist – manually, with your fingers – a collar. That twisting extends two fixing pins at the bottom of the shank so that they stick out and hold the device in place and prevent it from being withdrawn. This creates a lifting point. An integrated spring-lock mechanism keeps it secure. A clear visual indicator shows green to indicate that the positioning and locking are correct. It comes in a variety of sizes, with diameters 30- 41mm and lengths 16 to 100mm.

Working load limits are to 4.2 tonnes at 45°. The combination of speed,

simplicity, and reliability makes the PIP-Rapido a powerful solution for modern lifting operations, claims RUD. By replacing traditional bolting with a plug-in system, it helps save time, reduce effort, and improve productivity. Kito Crosby has also, under

its Gunnebo Industries brand, has developed a new lifting point engineered to replace traditional eye bolts. The LPE Lifting Point is designed to address the limitations of conventional eye bolts, particularly under side loads. It offers 360° rotation via ball

bearings for smooth, controlled movement, even under load. It has a patented bail design to reduce the risk of shock loading and can

be installed by hand, hex wrench, or spanner. The LPE lifting point has a high-visibility finish for enhanced safety and identification and is available in 7 thread sizes, from M8 to M30. As the global energy transition

gathers pace, the demands placed on lifting technology are becoming ever more exacting. From turbine blades and offshore assemblies to pipes and fabricated components, many of today’s loads are too large, too awkward, or too delicate for conventional lifting methods alone. Below the hook devices have therefore become indispensable, not only in enabling increasingly complex lifts, but in improving safety, reducing installation times, and extending operational windows in challenging conditions.

CALDWELL ADDS COIL LIFTER TO ITS SMARTSPEC CONFIGURATION PROGRAM

The Caldwell Group has added the Model 85 coil lifter to its SmartSpec program - a digital tool that allows distributors to confi gure lifting equipment. The motorised telescoping coil grab is one of the Rockford, Illinois, USA-

based manufacturer’s most popular products. While it is stocked in capacities up to 33 tons, it is also one of the company’s most customised lifters. Higher capacities, rotation options, load scales, indicator lights, padding, toe rollers, and other options are available. SmartSpec gives customisation options to dealers specifi cally looking for non-standard below-the-hook equipment. Ongoing investment in SmartSpec has created a web platform that allows customers to access pricing, place orders, and even design their own products any time, says Caldwell.
