MAMMOET Ӏ ELECTRIC & HYBRID ALL TERRAINS

Recent global oil supply disruption, and subsequent diesel price increases, will have focussed the minds of crane fleet owners around the world. Against this backdrop the potential cost savings, and stability of supply, offered by electric and hybrid powered all terrain cranes looks increasingly appealing. It is likely the wider market, however, is watching to see how early adopters of electric and hybrid all terrain technology fare before committing their own budgets.

One such early adopter is Dutch

heavy lift and transport specialist Mammoet. The company has long had a strong sustainability strategy; its recent focus on developing its electric and hybrid all terrain fleet could prove to be an important step in its multifaceted approach to sustainability.

"Our company is driven to

ensure that we provide clients with solutions that reduce their emissions on site,” says Mathias Hoogstra, head of sustainability at Mammoet. “By being at the forefront of the transition to hybrid and fully electric machines we contribute to a cleaner jobsite whilst supporting our own reduction ambitions."

SHOPPING SPREE The company has recently bought three new electric and hybrid models in a short (six-month) timeframe. The company, of course, has the luxury of scale facilitating its exploration of new spheres and trialling of new technologies but its pioneering approach must still be recognised. In October 2025 it took

delivery of an XCMG XCA60-EV. Two months later it received a Liebherr LTM1150-5.4E. And, most recently, in April 2026, came the news that it had taken delivery of a Grove GMK5150L-1e Plug-in Hybrid all-terrain crane.

XCMG XCA60-EV XCMG’S XCA60-EV was first announced as a prototype at Bauma 2022 as ‘the world’s first hybrid all-terrain crane’. It was first seen in the metal at Bauma 2025 – where another Dutch company, Wagenborg, took the world’s first model. Wagenbourg followed

this with an order for three more models in March 2025. XCMG revealed, however, that Mammoet had started trials of the crane as early as December 2024. Mammoet bought the XCMG

XCA60-EV as soon as it was officially widely available in Europe, around autumn 2025. The crane was shown at various industry trade fairs across Europe in quick succession towards the end of 2025. First Vertikal Days in the UK (see the Cranes Today video here: https://shorturl.at/ QIsGE, then JDL Expo in France, and also at GIS in Italy. XCMG says the 60-tonne

capacity crane, with a maximum lifting height of 63 metres, a boom length of 48 metres, and a working radius of 44 metres, is purpose- built for European jobsites. It offers emission-free hoisting, without sacrificing speed or efficiency, thanks to an integrated battery in the counterweight. This, it says, provides between six to eight hours of crane use. Alternatively, using a connection and the crane’s onboard power cable continuous electric operation is possible. The 115 kWh battery has fast

charging capabilities and is flexible in that it automatically switches to charging when required, to ensure continuous operations. A 400V plug-and-play electric

drive system for lifting operations is powered by a 170 kW electric motor. The crane’s dual-engine transport system has a total output of 400 kW. The hybrid system for travel means the XCMG XCA60-EV has low fuel usage. XCMG says this is further enhanced by the crane’s intelligent control system which dynamically distributes torque based on real- time driving conditions resulting in over 40% lower consumption compared to conventional models. The hybrid system also provides

regenerative charging capabilities, recharging the batteries while driving and braking. This, XCMG explains, means the crane arrives at the site with a fully charged battery. The crane comes complete with a host of operator assistance features. The crane’s low noise and vibration levels help promote a safer and healthier working
