COMMUNITY PHARMACY SCOTLAND CORNER
DIGITAL PRESCRIBING AND DISPENSING UPDATE
The CPS team are embedded in the programme which is looking to replace paper prescriptions in Scotland, aiming to make sure that the new electronic prescription messaging system works for both pharmacy teams and patients.
There will be some clear benefits to going digital – not least that items will be available to process as soon as they are signed by the prescriber and can be handled item by item. There are significant challenges for community pharmacy too – if businesses want to go completely paperless and take advantage of the possible efficiencies, most dispensing processes will need to be re-imagined. Part of our work at CPS is to work with our members to pull together the high- level requirements and costs of going digital to start a conversation with providers, the network and government colleagues about the support and funding that community pharmacy might need going forward.
Keep an eye out here for updates in future articles where we will explore a bit about how the system will work and what we think is required to get the best out of the opportunity!

• CPL will order your prescription pads; these are printed on a 6-week cycle for all new prescribers (one week CP, one optom etc) so depending on where the cycle is, the pad can take up to 8 weeks to arrive. Please be patient - we know you want your pads as soon as possible.
• CPL will also let you know of local arrangements and requirements for sign off. These must be completed before you can start delivering the service.
• Let the relevant people in the pharmacy where you work know, so any specific arrangements they have can get underway. If your pharmacy does not already offer the service, the sign up for the service needs to be completed. The
