PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Saying Goodbye To A Friend And Industry Icon

W

elcome to the newest edition of Self-Storage Canada, the official publication of the Canadian Self Storage Association. Nearly 18 years ago, I was introduced to Hal Spradling, a successful self-storage operator who was trailblazing the industry in the Canadian market. Over the years, Hal became a dear friend and a mentor on everything Canadian. If I had a question, needed a backstory, or an article for Self-Storge Canada, Hal was always there. To say Hal was bigger than life is an understatement. Sadly, on Feb. 16, 2024, Hal departed this world, leaving behind a legacy as remarkable as the life he led—a life filled with passion, dedication, and an undying zeal for every new day. Starting on page 6, you will find Hal’s story, from his humble beginnings to becoming a pioneering figure in the self-storage industry. Hal will be missed by many, especially this publisher, who could always count on him. You will be missed more than you know, my friend! In closing, we are excited to announce the First Annual Top

Operator’s survey. This is an opportunity for all of us to recognize and celebrate the outstanding contributions of our peers in the industry. The results of this survey will be published in the newly designed August edition of Self-Storage Canada, showcasing the strength and diversity of our industry. Details about the survey can be found on the opposite page. Should you have any additional questions, please email me at Poppy@ModernStorageMedia.com.
